Six border checkpoints along the Russian border with Lithuania and Poland will temporarily close due to scheduled power maintenance, according to Kaliningrad Regional Customs.
The closures are scheduled to take place between September 30 and October 21, 2026. Authorities plan a complete disconnection of electrical power at the border posts from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. local time on specified maintenance days.
Customs officials stated that the temporary shutdowns are necessary to perform planned technical maintenance on transformer substations and input distribution devices. Transformer substations and distribution units control the high-voltage electricity supply for border inspection facilities, requiring complete power cutoffs so engineering crews can safely service the equipment.
Checkpoint Stoppage Schedule
The temporary closures will begin at the Sovetsk multilateral automobile border crossing on September 30. The Chernyshevskoye multilateral automobile checkpoint will shut down for maintenance on October 5, followed by the Nesterov railway border checkpoint on October 7.
Work will resume mid-month, with closures planned at the Mamonovo crossing to Grzechotki on October 14 and at Bagrationovsk on October 16. The final maintenance period will take place on October 21 at the Baltiysk section in Kaliningrad.
Strategic Exclave Infrastructure
Kaliningrad Oblast is a Russian exclave situated on the Baltic Sea coast, separated from the rest of mainland Russia and bordered by Poland to the south and Lithuania to the north and east. Because both Poland and Lithuania are member states of the European Union and NATO, these checkpoints serve as critical international transit points for road transport, rail cargo, and passenger movement into neighboring European territory.
The affected border points span key transit routes across the enclave. Chernyshevskoye handles major commercial traffic along the eastern highway into Lithuania, while Nesterov operates as the central railway transit gateway. To the south, Mamonovo and Bagrationovsk manage major vehicle traffic entering northern Poland, and Baltiysk functions as the region's main western maritime port city.
Recent Regional Border Disruptions
The upcoming Baltic closures follow previous border disruptions elsewhere along Russia's frontiers. On September 25, the Verkhny Lars border checkpoint between Russia and Georgia was forced to close due to the threat of a mudflow, leaving approximately 1,000 people stranded near the crossing.
