Russian movie theaters recorded a 45 percent increase in revenue during the summer 2026 box office season compared to the previous year, according to industry figures released at the NSN press center. Ticket sales across the country also grew by 26 percent over the same period.
Alexey Vasyasin, head of Russia's largest combined cinema network Cinema Park and Formula Kino, announced the performance metrics during a news conference at the National News Service press center. He stated that the domestic film industry is displaying positive growth dynamics.
Vasyasin noted that financial earnings rose 45 percent while ticket sales increased 26 percent compared to last summer. He explained that there is still room for progress because several weeks lacked major movie releases, adding that a more uniform schedule would offset seasonal summer dips. He said industry leaders must continue improving release consistency, technological quality, and genre variety.
Cinema Park and Formula Kino operate as the primary combined theatrical exhibition chain in Russia, managing hundreds of screens nationwide. Cinema attendance in the country historically experiences seasonal declines during summer months, making content distribution schedules pivotal to maintaining box office momentum.
Domestic and Foreign Film Box Office Performance
The summer box office was highlighted by sharp competition between domestic Russian films and international releases. Major new Russian titles included Kholop 3, Na derevnyu dedushke 2, and Posledniy bogatyr. Kolobok.
Foreign feature films also drew significant audience demand throughout the season. The international release Michael earned more than 2.4 billion rubles by mid-July, while Dante's Code and other foreign pictures consistently maintained top positions in the overall rankings.
Audience turnout remained strong into August. Box office receipts for Russian movie theaters reached 602.5 million rubles during the weekend of August 13 to 16, nearly double the earnings from the same period last year.
The Russian film Posledniy bogatyr. Kolobok led the box office during that four-day weekend, generating approximately 192.5 million rubles to capture over 31 percent of the market share. Total box office receipts for the film have surpassed 850 million rubles, according to figures previously disclosed by Vasyasin at the NSN press center.
