Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko came to the aid of a passenger who suffered dangerously high blood pressure on a flight from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Moscow on August 30. News portal KP.RU reported the incident involving Rustem Ganeev, a 44-year-old resident of Ufa.
Ganeev was returning home from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky with his 11-year-old son and friends when his health began to deteriorate shortly after the aircraft gained altitude. He checked his blood pressure using a monitor, which registered a reading of nearly 180.
Alarmed by the high reading, Ganeev requested assistance from the cabin crew. Flight attendants quickly began searching for a doctor among the passengers on board the aircraft to treat the ailing passenger.
In-flight medical assistance
Murashko, who was traveling on the same flight, approached Ganeev's seat shortly after the cabin crew called for assistance. He inquired about the passenger's condition, questioned him about his recent medical checkups, and performed an initial examination.
Ganeev did not recognize the government minister right away. He told KP.RU that Murashko introduced himself as a doctor, spoke politely, and acted with modesty. Ganeev said he felt the man's face was familiar, but did not immediately realize who he was.
To evaluate the passenger's heart function, Murashko took off his own wrist watch and placed it onto Ganeev's wrist. Ganeev explained that the smartwatch was equipped with an electrocardiogram feature, allowing the minister to monitor his cardiac rhythm directly.
Following his examination, Murashko selected several medications from the airplane's first-aid kit and administered an injection to Ganeev. The drugs took effect rapidly, causing the passenger's blood pressure to drop and allowing him to feel better for the remainder of the flight.
Passenger response and background
Ganeev expressed deep gratitude after his friends informed him of the minister's identity. He told KP.RU that Murashko treated him with genuine warmth strictly as a physician and a kind person, without citing his official title or creating unnecessary formality. He added that he was immensely thankful to Mikhail Albertovich for his intervention.
Murashko is a trained medical doctor who specialized in obstetrics and gynecology and worked in public health administration prior to his federal appointment. He has served as Russia's Minister of Healthcare since January 2020 under Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, overseeing the country's public healthcare system and medical regulations.
The flight departed from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. Flights between Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Moscow cover more than 6,000 kilometers and cross eight time zones, making the route one of the longest domestic non-stop flights in the country, lasting around eight to nine hours.
Ganeev was returning to his hometown of Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan in southwestern Russia. Commercial airliners are equipped with emergency medical kits containing diagnostic tools and prescription medications. Cabin crews are trained to handle in-flight medical emergencies by providing basic care and seeking qualified medical professionals among passengers to assist in critical situations.
