The six-episode television comedy follows a group of stray felines who spend their days lounging in an abandoned building, watching television and swearing at the screen. The production omits canned laughter, featuring characters who interrupt one another while observing human behaviour from a feline perspective.

Gervais, who gained international prominence after co-creating and starring in the British mockumentary sitcom The Office before writing and directing series such as After Life, serves as creator, scriptwriter, director and lead voice actor for the project. Netflix, the global subscription streaming network headquartered in Los Gatos, California, released the full six-episode season worldwide.

Gervais voices Gus, an overweight orange cat with traits reminiscent of Garfield, who serves as the inexplicable leader of the pack. Gus represents everything a cat is while neglecting standard feline duties, sharing the screen with his cousin Olive, voiced by English comedian Diane Morgan, who lives in the apartment upstairs.

The feline crew includes Fang, played by Andrew Brooke, a muscular and unpleasant tough guy who acts as the group enforcer. David Earl voices Potao, a scruffy feline who avoids showers and manners while indulging in perverted sexual habits. Tom Basden plays Finolis, a domesticated pet from a middle-class family who leaves the comfort of home to mingle with the street cats, attempting to establish order or intensify the chaos.

A Lost Kitten and Cemetery Excursions

The gang spends long days sprawled on a favoured sofa inside a small room of an abandoned house. They pass the time watching television programs while offering harsh critiques of human struggles and sharks in equal measure. Occasionally, the felines venture out to a local cemetery to hunt for mice or engage in routine feline behaviour.

Their static routine changes across the six episodes after they encounter a small lost kitten, voiced by Jo Hartley, who cannot find her way back home. The secondary cast features Gus's mother, voiced by EastEnders actress Natalie Cassidy, his girlfriend Lara, played by Kerry Godliman, and a neighborhood drug dealer, voiced by Tony Way, alongside animals of other species and cats that have been run over by vehicles.

Profanity, Mortality and Social Commentary

The series relies heavily on foul language, featuring profanity and insults every two seconds. Interspersed between the vulgarities are discussions regarding friendship, social class, mortality and how humans appear when viewed through the eyes of felines.

Gervais said the inspiration for making cats the main characters came from the idea that they could be people, specifically very rude people. The characters frequently excuse their behavior by stating that such actions are simply things that cats do.

Themes of mortality and an obsession with death run through the storyline, mirroring creative motives found in previous works by Gervais. The narrative balances a sense of defeatism on screen with moments of dark optimism, while the character of Potao acts as a sad and brutal metaphor for the central message of the show.

Animation Influences and Audience Reception

The show draws stylistic inspiration from famous adult animated comedies, inheriting traits from Beavis and Butt-Head, created by Mike Judge for MTV in 1993, and South Park, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Viewers unaccustomed to Gervais's brand of humour may find the production crude or boring, evoking the initial confusion felt by audiences who watched Beavis and Butt-Head during its original 1990s run.

Critics note that the short running time makes the six-episode series quick to watch, though its wild tone remains difficult to forget. Rather than breaking new technical ground, the project presents the uninhibited felines living inside the twisted mind of its creator.
