Protein-packed cookies, chips, and bars sold in grocery store aisles may secretly trigger hunger, stomach discomfort, and blood sugar crashes due to low dietary fiber and ultra-processed ingredients, dietitians from the Cleveland Clinic and Penn Medicine have warned.
Nutrition experts stated that many convenient snacks carry a prominent health halo, a marketing tactic where a single positive word on a label leads consumers to believe the entire food product is healthy.
Beth Czerwony, a registered dietitian for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Human Nutrition, explained that market demand has driven a surge in high-protein product releases.
"High protein options have flooded the marketplace over the past few years due to the notion that everyone needs to increase their protein intake," Czerwony said.
She cautioned that protein claims frequently mask low-quality base ingredients. "Some bar/cookie options mimic saturated sugar options and are no better than a typical candy bar, but consumers are fooled by the packaging because it may contain protein," Czerwony added.

Role of dietary fiber in satiety
While protein remains essential for muscle repair and satiety, experts emphasized that pre-packaged items often lack key nutrients found in whole grains, legumes, or nuts.
Caroline Meehan, a registered dietitian and diabetes educator with Penn Medicine in Philadelphia, noted that fiber is critical to maintaining a feeling of fullness.

"Many protein-packed snacks are missing a key nutrient that helps keep us full: dietary fiber," Meehan said. "While protein is important, it is only one piece of the puzzle when building a satisfying snack."

According to the American Diabetes Association, snacks high in protein but lacking fiber digest rapidly, causing blood sugar to rise and fall in a pattern similar to refined carbohydrates.
Scientific research on ultra-processed snacks
Research indicates that ultra-processed snacks can interfere with normal hunger signaling. A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism cited how the physiological impact of these foods often works against brain hunger signals.
"Fiber helps to slow digestion and promote fullness, so snacks that contain protein, but little fiber may not keep people satisfied for very long," Meehan explained.
Czerwony emphasized that using low-fiber snacks to fill nutritional gaps can be counterproductive. "Depending on these snacks to supplement needed nutrients in the diet can lead to fluctuations in blood sugar due to low fiber," she noted.
The metabolic effects of processed foods are documented in recent medical literature. A 2025 study in Nature Reviews Endocrinology highlighted that ultra-processed foods disrupt natural appetite regulation systems. Additionally, a 2024 randomized crossover trial of protein snack bars revealed that satiety biomarkers vary by specific snack formulation, demonstrating that protein content alone does not predict fullness.
Health risks and red flag symptoms
Certain populations face heightened risks from rapid blood sugar swings caused by low-fiber snacks.

"Individuals with prediabetes, diabetes, insulin resistance, or other metabolic concerns may be more sensitive to fluctuations in blood sugar levels," Meehan warned.
Consumers who regularly eat protein bars are advised to watch for signs such as brain fog or digestive distress. Czerwony explained that high levels of sodium and artificial additives in processed snacks can alter gastric emptying rates.
"Red flags to be aware of include stomach pain and severe bloating that is caused by an increase in sodium or artificial additives which can cause gastric emptying and potentially increase blood pressure," Czerwony cautioned.
Recommended whole food alternatives
Dietitians advise replacing packaged convenience foods with whole foods to achieve sustained daily energy.
Meehan suggested adopting a pairing method rather than concentrating solely on protein content. "Rather than focusing on protein alone, think about building snacks using the 'pairing method' by including a source of protein, fiber, and healthy fats," she said.
Effective combinations include pairing fruit with nut butter, or mixing Greek yogurt with chia seeds to create balanced mini-meals.
"Consumers who are trying to improve their diets should focus more on a whole food approach and depend less on ultra processed, convenience foods," Czerwony said.
Meehan concluded that while protein is important, "it shouldn't be the only nutrient considered when choosing a snack." Prioritizing fiber, healthy fats, and whole ingredients helps prevent mid-afternoon energy crashes and maintains stable hunger levels throughout the day.
