Pokémon Stop-Motion Series Set for Disney+ Release in 2027

The stop-motion animated series Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu will premiere on Disney+ in 2027, according to an official franchise announcement.

The official reveal took place in San Francisco during PokémonXP, which organizers hosted as the first major official convention for Pokémon fans. Attendees at the event received a first look at the project through a preview trailer.

In the teaser trailer shown on Friday, Sirfetch'd and Pichu appear across various environments until Sirfetch'd crashes into a sign announcing the year 2027. According to the official synopsis, the show follows the duo on an epic journey across the wild wilderness of the Galar region on a brave mission to help and protect Pokémon throughout the area.

The synopsis added that while their missions rarely proceed as planned, their noble actions forge a strong friendship as they venture boldly into the unknown. Producers noted that viewers can expect dangerous obstacles, surprising alliances, rivalries, extraordinary Pokémon species, and plenty of comedy.

Background of the Pokémon franchise and characters

The upcoming series is set in Galar, a fictional region introduced in the 2019 video games Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. Designed with geography and culture inspired by Great Britain, Galar features diverse environments ranging from modern cities to expansive wild areas filled with free-roaming creatures.

The show stars two distinct creatures from the long-running video game franchise created by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures in 1996. Pichu is an Electric-type mouse Pokémon introduced as the pre-evolved form of Pikachu, the official mascot of the franchise. Sirfetch'd is a Fighting-type avian Pokémon native to the Galar region, known for wielding a large leek stalk as a lance and shield.

Stop-motion animation and Disney+ release

The project relies on stop-motion animation, a specialized filmmaking technique where animators physically manipulate tangible puppets or physical models frame by frame to capture individual photographs. When played in sequence, these frames create fluid motion, offering a rich visual texture that stands apart from standard two-dimensional anime or computer-generated imagery.

Disney+ will serve as the exclusive global home for the series when it debuts. Launched in November 2019 by The Walt Disney Company, the streaming platform carries extensive family entertainment and anime content to viewers around the world. Initial production plans for the Pokémon project were first announced in June at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. Created in 1960, the annual Annecy festival is recognized as one of the world's premier animation events for debuting major film and television projects.

The 2027 debut on Disney+ will mark the first time this specific stop-motion storyline reaches streaming audiences worldwide.
