Physical exercise cannot undo or reduce the health damage caused by smoking, Brazil's National Cancer Institute warned on Saturday during a campaign launch.
The federal agency, known as INCA, introduced the initiative under the campaign slogan Physical Activity and Health: Training Does Not Go With Smoking to mark National Day Against Smoking.
The campaign aims to mobilize the population regarding the hazards of tobacco products in Brazil, where approximately 477 people die every day from smoking-related health problems.
INCA operates as Brazil's national agency for cancer prevention and control policies under the Ministry of Health. The country observes National Day Against Smoking annually on August 29 to promote public health awareness and support smoking cessation.
Nicotine effects on the body
According to health experts at the institute, nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict and restricts blood flow to muscles and organs. The substance also promotes inflammatory processes in the body, directly contributing to an increase in non-communicable chronic diseases such as lung cancer.
Non-communicable chronic diseases are long term conditions that include cardiovascular illnesses and chronic lung disorders. Health officials noted that while exercise releases substances linked to pleasure and well-being that help lower withdrawal symptoms during quitting attempts, physical activity cannot erase the internal damage tobacco inflicts.
Vera Borges, a psychologist and specialist in smoking treatment, stated that all physical gains achieved through exercise would be lost because of the harm caused by tobacco products.
Electronic cigarettes and free treatment
The campaign also warns against experimentation with electronic smoking devices, known as DEFs, and other tobacco derivatives among younger people. INCA emphasized that electronic products are not less harmful than conventional cigarettes.
For individuals who want to quit smoking, Brazil's Unified Health System, known as SUS, provides free medical treatment through local basic health units, or UBS. Patients can visit a nearby clinic or consult the official INCA website to view available treatment locations in each region.
The Unified Health System delivers public health services across Brazilian municipalities, ensuring that residents can access smoking cessation support and medical guidance without cost.
