The Salvadoran presidency postponed the reading of the verdict in the mass trial of nearly 500 alleged leaders of the Mara Salvatrucha gang on Sunday.
Government officials notified journalists that the scheduled decision would not take place on Monday as expected. The presidency gave no reasons for the delay, stating that authorities will announce a new court date once it is established.
The mass trial, which has been underway since April, marks the first time in El Salvador that an entire gang command structure has been tried collectively. The case involves 485 alleged leaders of the syndicate accused of committing offenses between 2012 and 2022. All defendants are participating in the proceedings remotely via video link while held in various prisons across the country.
Scope of Criminal Charges
Judges are set to rule on more than 47,420 criminal counts brought by state prosecutors against the defendants. The charges include drug trafficking, arms smuggling, femicides, forced disappearances, and thousands of homicides.
Among the total charges, prosecutors have linked 22 top leaders of the organization to approximately 29,000 homicides. During court sessions in June, the prosecution requested cumulative prison sentences amounting to thousands of years for the accused gang heads.
Gang History and Anti-Crime Crackdown
Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13, was formed during the 1990s in the United States before establishing itself as one of the most powerful and ruthless criminal organizations in Central America.
President Nayib Bukele, a right-wing leader who took office in 2019, has driven a major campaign against criminal gangs since 2022. Relying on a state of emergency, Bukele has maintained high public popularity for reducing violent crime rates.
Human Rights Concerns and Comparisons
Bukele has compared the mass trial to the Nuremberg proceedings held against leaders of Nazi Germany in the aftermath of World War II.
However, international non-governmental organizations have criticized the judicial process. Human rights groups argue that trying hundreds of defendants en masse violates their right to a fair trial, while alleging that widespread human rights abuses have occurred under the ongoing state of emergency.
