Paros taxi driver charged after viral fight over parking

A taxi driver on the Greek island of Paros faces criminal charges of grievous bodily harm after a viral dispute over a parking spot with an elderly car rental employee escalated into violence in Naoussa.

Public prosecutors ordered the criminal case against the cabbie following the confrontation, which was captured on video by onlookers and quickly went viral across social media platforms.

The confrontation began when the car rental company employee attempted to park a rental scooter in a space that local taxi drivers assert is exclusively reserved for their vehicles.

The dispute started with the two men exchanging heated insults before the taxi driver lunged at the employee, grabbed him by the throat, and slammed him onto the scooter.

Video footage of the incident also shows the employee striking the taxi driver with a helmet he was holding. Bystanders eventually intervened to separate the two men and end the fight.

Following the altercation, authorities officially referred the elderly victim for a forensic medical examination. Results from the examination will be crucial for documenting the severity of his injuries in the case file before it is submitted to the prosecutor, who will press formal charges and fix a court date.

Paros is an island situated in the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, renowned as one of Greece's major summer travel destinations. Naoussa is a coastal town and harbour village on the northern side of the island that experiences heavy tourist traffic during the peak summer season.

Paros Taxi Association condemns violence

In the wake of the incident, the Board of Directors of the Paros Taxi Association issued an official statement expressing its unequivocal and categorical opposition to all forms of violence, regardless of their origin or circumstances.

Addressing the event in Naoussa, the board clarified that such conduct does not represent or reflect the professional standards of taxi drivers operating on the island.

The association acknowledged that industry professionals face significantly heightened workload and professional pressure during the summer season as a daily reality. However, the board stressed that these conditions can under no circumstances serve as an excuse, justification, or alibi for acts of violence or inappropriate behavior.

The board explicitly condemned the specific attack and, on behalf of their former colleague, offered a sincere apology to the elderly victim, his family, and the local community for the unacceptable conduct.

At the same time, the association noted that the video circulating on social media captures only a portion of what actually occurred and does not show what happened before recording began. Based on available information, prior events contributed to the escalation, which the board stated must be considered for a complete picture, though it emphasized that this observation was not intended to excuse or condone the violent behavior.

The Paros Taxi Association concluded its statement by reaffirming its ongoing commitment to principles of professionalism, respect, and dignified conduct toward every resident and visitor on the island.

Taxi driver dismissed following confrontation

The taxi driver at the center of the dispute has since been dismissed from his position following the public reaction to the violent altercation.

Speaking in an interview with Greek television channel Alpha TV, the driver provided his own account of what transpired with the car rental worker and insisted that he did not strike first.

The driver stated during the broadcast that the employee verbally abused him, shouted at him, and hit him with the helmet he was carrying.

When asked by the interviewer whether the other man had attacked him first, the driver responded by asking if anyone thought he would go to attack the worker first. He added that he did not want such a conflict, particularly given his position and his daily presence at the location.

Escalating dispute over reserved taxi rank

According to the driver, the altercation was the culmination of weeks of ongoing tension over the use of the taxi rank area.

He asserted that the designated spot is strictly restricted to taxis, police vehicles, and ambulances, declaring that no other vehicles are allowed to enter the rank.

The driver alleged that the employee of the nearby car rental business repeatedly used the restricted space for company vehicles and customer drop-offs. He claimed the worker regularly parked rental scooters in the area and instructed customers to return hired vehicles there, creating continuous problems for taxis attempting to use the rank.

He added that the frequent presence of non-taxi vehicles in the space led visiting tourists to assume that they were also permitted to park there.

Describing the car rental worker as very argumentative and very provocative, the driver stated that past attempts by other cabbies to approach him calmly and speak politely had always resulted in trouble.

The driver expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that the recorded images had cast a negative light on both the island of Paros and the taxi profession as a whole.

He concluded that he certainly did not want to engage in a physical fight with an elderly man and expressed regret for what happened, but maintained that the worker attacked him first both verbally and physically with the helmet, pushing him to that point.
