Madrid-born actress Oona Chaplin is taking on the biggest challenge of her career after joining the Avatar film universe as Na'vi leader Varang.
Chaplin plays Varang, the leader of the Ash People clan, who makes her debut in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The role is described as a complex and decisive character for the evolution of the sci-fi saga created by director James Cameron.
Her character will also feature in Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, establishing the Spanish actress as one of the key new additions to Cameron's film franchise.
The major role represents a delayed reward for Chaplin. The actress was originally cast in the part in 2017 and had to wait eight years before her character's screen debut.
Set on the fictional alien moon of Pandora, the Avatar series began with Cameron's 2009 film, which remains the highest-grossing movie of all time. The third installment introduces the Ash People, a new volcanic clan of the indigenous blue-skinned Na'vi.

Career in television and film
Before joining the Pandora franchise, Chaplin established a solid reputation across British, European, and international productions. She gained global recognition for her role as Talisa Maegyr in HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones, playing the noble healer who married Robb Stark.
The Emmy Award-winning series was one of the most widely watched television shows in the world during its eight-season run, providing Chaplin with her initial breakthrough to worldwide audiences.
Born in Madrid in 1986, Chaplin received an international education across Spain and Switzerland. She later trained in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), one of the world's most prestigious drama schools, which was founded in 1904.
Chaplin began her professional career on British television before her breakout on Game of Thrones. She subsequently strengthened her reputation as a character actress with roles in television series such as Black Mirror and Taboo, the romantic feature film The Longest Ride, and various European film productions.

A legendary Hollywood lineage
Behind her international leap is a solid body of work and one of the most illustrious artistic dynasties in cinema history. Chaplin is the daughter of English-American actress Geraldine Chaplin and Chilean cinematographer Patricio Castilla.
She is the granddaughter of silent film icon Sir Charlie Chaplin and his wife Oona O'Neill, as well as the great-granddaughter of Nobel Prize-winning American playwright Eugene O'Neill.
Charlie Chaplin was a pioneer of early Hollywood, famous for his iconic Tramp character and films such as The Gold Rush and Modern Times. Eugene O'Neill won four Pulitzer Prizes for Drama and remains one of America's most celebrated playwrights.
Chaplin remains very close to her mother, Geraldine Chaplin, an accomplished film star known for her work in classics such as Doctor Zhivago. Chaplin has consistently spoken of her mother with admiration, while learning to navigate the weight of a legendary surname without allowing it to define her career.
Private life and future projects
In her personal life, Chaplin maintains a very discreet profile. She has not publicly confirmed any stable romantic partner and has no known children, a choice aligned with her desire to safeguard her privacy.
Her major involvement in the Avatar sequels marks the start of the most ambitious stage of her professional journey, consolidating her position as one of Spain's most prominent international acting exports in Hollywood.
