Social media users have launched the Normal Girl Summer trend in 2026 to encourage women to drop makeup, diets and high fashion for basic clothing.
The movement emerged after summer 2026 lacked a single iconic fashion trend, according to a report by Russian news outlet Lenta.ru. In previous years, summer seasons were defined by viral labels such as Hot Girl Summer or Brat Summer, which was named after an album by English singer Charli XCX. Supporters of Normal Girl Summer argue that women should focus on themselves, wear simple outfits, and embrace their natural appearance rather than chasing shifting style trends.
The trend represents a reaction against social pressure to spend summer traveling, partying, and maintaining an ideal beach body. Young people, particularly members of Generation Z, often feel forced to present an exciting life online because social media platforms create the impression that others are constantly vacationing or dating.
Instead, followers of the trend are romanticising routine activities such as working during the week, staying home in the evening, and avoiding weekend parties. The movement shares roots with Nun Girl Summer, a concept promoted by American reality television star Khloe Kardashian that urges women to step back from dating, sex, and romantic drama to focus on mental health.

Pop Stars Adopt Everyday Style
Pop musicians have also adopted plain clothing on stage, swapping elaborate concert costumes for basic items. International fashion magazine Elle noted that singers adopted minimalistic wardrobes to draw less attention to themselves, though the choice ultimately generated widespread interest.
New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde has become a central figure in the movement. Her minimalist stage appearance matches the message of her breakthrough single Royals, in which she sang that her generation would never be royals because luxury is not in their blood. While rival performers wear feathers and rhinestones, Lorde routinely performs in a basic T-shirt and matching wide trousers that resemble everyday casual wear.

American singer Gracie Abrams, whose song I Miss You, I'm Sorry went viral on video platform TikTok, previously wore formal pant suits and flowing dresses. At a recent performance, Abrams took the stage wearing a white ribbed tank top, a grey cap, and black trousers from German sportswear manufacturer Adidas.
Off stage, American social media personality and singer Addison Rae, who is frequently compared to pop star Britney Spears, routinely wears oversized T-shirts and tight shorts in public. Fans online frequently praise her normal body type, reflecting a desire among audiences to see relatable pop figures who do not conform to unattainable beauty standards.

Shift Toward Sincerity and Comfort
Fashion commentators view the popularity of simple clothing as a reflection of audience fatigue with constant cosmetic and aesthetic demands. Italian fashion publication Vogue Italia noted that modern audiences may no longer be looking for an unattainable ideal to idolise, but rather a mirror that reflects their own reality during times of instability.
By replacing complex wardrobes with plain T-shirts, regular jeans, and comfortable sneakers, the movement allows participants to step back from public expectations and focus on personal comfort.
