Christopher Nolan's latest feature film The Odyssey has grossed 1.352 billion dollars at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie in cinema history. Russian film critic David Shneyderov praised the epic as one of the best projects in the career of the British-American filmmaker, who is widely known for high-concept cinematic blockbusters.
Speaking in an interview with Radio 1, Shneyderov said the three-hour feature flew by in a single breath and left him wishing it had not ended. He also addressed public debates surrounding how accurately the adaptation reflects the ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer, which details the legendary decade-long journey of Odysseus following the Trojan War.
Shneyderov urged moviegoers to determine their expectations before entering the theater, explaining that viewers must decide if they are going to watch Homer or Nolan. He noted that the opening credits explicitly mark the work as a loose adaptation, granting the director full artistic liberty to present his personal interpretation.
Cast performances and creative choices
In his review for the radio station, Shneyderov offered mixed assessments of the cast. He highlighted Anne Hathaway as brilliant in her role, while admitting he did not enjoy the performance of Tom Holland because he does not particularly care for the actor.
The critic singled out Nolan's decision to conceal the face of Agamemnon, the legendary Greek king, calling it an intriguing choice that transformed the character into a Darth Vader-like figure reminiscent of the masked Star Wars villain. Shneyderov added that the film weaves distinct Shakespearean motifs into its overall narrative.
Comparing the blockbuster to the 1997 television miniseries directed by Russian filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky, Shneyderov acknowledged that Konchalovsky offered a narrative much closer to Homer's text. However, he stressed that Nolan honestly informed audiences beforehand that his adaptation was only based on the original epic.
Recent box office records
The record for The Odyssey arrives alongside other major commercial milestones reported in recent cinema. The horror film Obsession set a decade record after generating over 500 million dollars at the box office, while anticipation for the upcoming Spider-Man feature has driven strong ticket sales in Russian theaters.
