The film, based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer, took in more than $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office over four weekends. The outlet noted that "The Odyssey" also became the highest-grossing project in the careers of its lead stars, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson.

Passing Nolan's Batman films

The epic overtook Nolan's previous record holders, "The Dark Knight" ($1.008 billion) and "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion). Combined box office receipts across all of Nolan's films have now topped $7 billion.

It was previously reported that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held screenings of "The Odyssey" for its members, who vote annually on the Oscars, in Los Angeles, New York and London. Guests reacted enthusiastically to the film, and all three screenings were nearly sold out, reflecting strong interest in Nolan's picture among Oscar voters.
