Nikos Mouratidis, a longtime figure in the Greek music industry, has recalled how he discovered singer Giorgos Mazonakis performing at a nightclub in Patras in the summer of 1992, when Mazonakis was just 20 years old. Speaking to Newsbeast.gr, Mouratidis said that meeting marked the start of a professional relationship that lasted roughly a decade.
Mouratidis said he was working in the recording industry at the time and was drawn to Mazonakis because of his young age, his distinctive presence and the way he performed laiko, or Greek popular, songs. He said he heard Mazonakis singing at the nightclub, liked that he was so young and modern yet delivered laiko songs so well, and signed him to a recording contract with his company.
Mazonakis went on to become one of the best-known names in Greek laiko music, building a decades-long career as a singer and performer across Greece.
From a Recording Deal to Full Career Management
The professional relationship did not stop at a recording contract. Mouratidis said he also took over as Mazonakis's manager, staying by his side for around ten years through the 1990s.
He described that period as unlike anything else in his career up to that point, saying he began with a completely unknown young singer and watched him grow into a leading name in Greek music. He said he was also his manager for about a decade during the 1990s, and that he effectively did something he had never done before in his career: he took someone entirely unknown and turned him into a superstar.
Mouratidis said the relationship went beyond professional choices. He said personal guidance made up a significant part of that period, as he was working with a very young man who was just beginning to build a public profile.
He said he did not only concern himself with Mazonakis's career but with him as a person, teaching him things such as going to the cinema and the theatre, reading, and listening to foreign music. He said he shaped a very large part of Mazonakis's character and personality during that time.
"Like a Father, a Manager and a Friend"
Mouratidis's account suggests he saw his role with the young Mazonakis as far broader than a standard professional partnership. He said he was like a father to him, a manager to him, and a friend, all at once.
Discussing Mazonakis's character, Mouratidis described him as someone who was not easy to read, referring to fears he said he could never fully understand. He said Mazonakis was a complex personality, not a simple person, and that he carried a great many phobias whose causes he could not explain.
Mouratidis went on to use a specific phrase, which he himself placed in quotation marks, to describe what he believed troubled Mazonakis internally. He said Mazonakis was pursued by various "demons", his own choice of word, and that he was never able to escape them. Mouratidis added that this led to the outcomes seen in recent years, which he said everyone had witnessed.
