Netflix unveils trailer for Coronado show El problema final

Netflix released the official trailer on Thursday for El problema final, a four-part thriller series starring Jose Coronado that adapts the murder mystery novel by Spanish author Arturo Perez-Reverte.

The streaming platform confirmed that all four episodes of the miniseries will premiere worldwide on September 25. The project is produced by Spanish production company Mod Producciones.

The new video, running almost two minutes, offers a first look at an ensemble cast working to solve a deadly crime where every guest and employee remains a suspect. Early previews indicate that the story draws inspiration from classic detective fiction, carrying echoes of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

An isolated island murder mystery

The narrative of El problema final is set during the spring of 1959 on a secluded islet located off the coast of Mallorca. A sudden storm cuts off communication and leaves 13 people stranded inside a small local hotel.

The quiet atmosphere is shattered when Elisa Mander, a discreet tourist of English origin staying at the establishment, is discovered dead. While initial appearances suggest she took her own life, investigators quickly begin treating her death as a murder.

Jose Coronado stars as Basil, a retired actor who gained fame on the big screen playing the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Unexpectedly pressed into service by the surrounding crisis, Basil reluctantly takes charge of unraveling what happened before the killer strikes again.

The investigation grows increasingly intricate with each passing hour as Basil attempts to uncover the truth. With the island cut off from the mainland, everyone trapped inside the hotel, from wealthy guests to hotel staff, holds a potential motive.

A star-studded Spanish cast

The production features a prominent lineup of Spanish acting talent alongside Coronado. The ensemble cast includes Maria Valverde, Martino Rivas, Maribel Verdu, Gonzalo de Castro, Cristina Kovani, Jose Condessa, and Pepon Nieto.

Coronado is one of Spain's most recognized screen actors, having earned a Goya Award for Best Actor. International audiences know him from leading roles in hit television series such as El Principe, Vivir sin permiso, Entrevias, and La chica de nieve.

Co-star Maribel Verdu brings extensive international acclaim to the project, having starred in Oscar-winning films including Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth and Alfonso Cuaron's Y tu mama tambien. Maria Valverde previously won a Goya Award for Best New Actress and starred in the romantic drama Tres metros sobre el cielo as well as Ridley Scott's historical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings.

The supporting cast also features veteran performers Pepon Nieto, widely known for long-running television dramas like Los hombres de Paco, alongside Martino Rivas of Las chicas del cable and Gonzalo de Castro of Doctor Mateo.

Direction and literary origins

Felix Viscarret serves as director for all four episodes of the miniseries. Viscarret previously won a Goya Award for his debut feature Bajo las estrellas and directed the television adaptation of Patria.

The screenplays for the adaptation were written by Alberto Macias, Carlos Molinero, and Marisol Farre. Their scripts directly adapt Perez-Reverte's 2023 novel of the same name.

Author Arturo Perez-Reverte is a former war journalist and a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. He is one of the Spanish-speaking world's most widely read novelists, famous for historical and mystery novels such as El club Dumas and La reina del sur.

El problema final will be available to stream globally when Netflix debuts all four episodes on September 25.
