Moscow airports delay and cancel nearly 200 flights

Nearly 200 flights were delayed or canceled at airports across Moscow due to overnight restrictions, according to local news reports on Monday.

Sheremetyevo International Airport recorded the highest number of affected flights among Moscow's transport hubs. A total of 60 departing flights and 80 arriving flights suffered delays at the facility.

Operational changes also disrupted schedules at other capital airports. Approximately 40 flights were affected by schedule adjustments at Vnukovo International Airport, while Domodedovo Airport recorded delays involving 13 flights.

Major destination delays

Passengers traveling on domestic long distance flights into Siberia experienced the longest wait times. Flights departing from Moscow to the city of Tomsk, located in Western Siberia, suffered severe delays reaching up to 21 hours.

Air travel to eastern Russia and international destinations also suffered significant disruption. Services bound for Irkutsk in eastern Russia and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates were delayed by 10 hours. Flights heading to the Armenian capital of Yerevan faced delays of eight hours.

Moscow aviation hubs

Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo serve as the primary commercial airports for the Moscow metropolitan area, handling domestic connections across Russia and international routes. Sheremetyevo operates to the northwest of the city, Domodedovo to the south, and Vnukovo to the southwest.

Tomsk and Irkutsk are major urban and industrial centers in Siberia, situated thousands of kilometers east of Moscow, making air travel essential for passengers traveling from the capital. Dubai and Yerevan are key international travel destinations that connect Russia to the Middle East and the Caucasus region.

Previous passenger disruptions

The flight delays in Moscow follow a separate air travel incident reported earlier involving Russian tourists stranded abroad. Dozens of travelers were left stranded for 24 hours at an airport in Abkhazia due to an airline fault. That disruption affected 50 tourists originating from Ufa, the capital of Russia's Bashkortostan region.
