Adventurers Maxime and Joana became the first pair eliminated from Koh-Lanta: All Stars in Panama during Tuesday night's season premiere on TF1.
The 25th anniversary edition of the French reality television series features 18 returning contestants competing in mixed male and female pairs whose destinies are linked from the outset, meaning any elimination sends both partners home together.
Koh-Lanta, the long-running French adaptation of the Survivor franchise hosted by Denis Brogniart, brought nine men and nine women from nine previous seasons to the Pearl Islands archipelago off the Pacific coast of Panama. Upon arriving in the tropical archipelago, the veteran castaways were informed of the production team's new rule linking each duo's fate throughout the competition.
The premiere episode, available for streaming on TF1+, opened with a strenuous initial comfort challenge called the shared weights. In each round of the event, one member of each pair suspended a heavy metallic basket while their partner ran to load weight into the boats of rival teams.
After 40 minutes of intense physical effort, Vincent and Laure from the Secret Weapons season were the first to break under the strain due to being less physically built than their competitors. They were followed in succession by Lola and Dorian from The 4 Lands, Freddy and Christina from The New Edition, Ugo and Camille from Malaysia, Tania and Nicolas from Secret Weapons, Maxime and Joana from The Revenge of the 4 Lands, and Moussa and Naoil from The Island of Heroes.
Clémentine, competing for her fourth time, and her partner Yassin from The Battle of the Heroes secured victory by defeating Jacques and Charlotte, the winner of The Cursed Tribe. Following their win, Yassin said he had never doubted their complementarity, adding that when they managed to unite their forces they succeeded in achieving great things.
As reward winners, Clémentine and Yassin selected Charlotte and Jacques to join them on Salvation Islet for a night in a cabin equipped with a fishing rod, along with exclusive information and practice time for the upcoming immunity challenge. The losing pairs were sent to a barren virgin island where they struggled to build shelter and light a fire. Facing difficulties despite their veteran status, Maxime joked that there were simply too many stars on the island, causing the fire to become frightened and run away.
Immunity challenge and camp strategy
The contestants next faced a brand new immunity challenge named the unstable column. Standing on interconnected seesaw boards, each pair had to balance six wooden pieces before stepping back behind a designated marker line of their team color.
Christina and Freddy narrowly beat Dorian and Lola to claim the first immunity totem of the season. Following the victory, Christina, who is from Marseille, said the result gave her confidence and strength while reassuring her. Her partner Freddy, a young father now living in Bali, said he had wondered whether he still had what it took, describing winning the opening immunity challenge as magical.
With Christina and Freddy immune from voting at tribal council, the remaining contestants began debating whom to target. Vincent and Laure felt endangered after failing early in the physical challenge, but Joana grew concerned about Maxime's lack of social gameplay. Just as he had done during his first season, the contestant from Vosges spent most of his time in nature eating insects rather than building alliances, leading Joana to warn him that he was living in denial.
Strategic maneuvering intensified when Lola suggested shifting the vote away from Vincent and Laure to eliminate former boxing champions Moussa and Naoil instead. Dorian expressed fear over the devious plan, whereas Tania, a nutrition coach turned influencer, was receptive to the idea. However, Joana admired Moussa and alerted him to the plot while placing the blame on Tania. When confronted, Tania defended herself but refused to expose Lola, who escaped scrutiny for the time being.
Tribal council tie and second chance twist
At tribal council, the initial vote resulted in a 9-9 tie between Laure and Maxime. Host Denis Brogniart informed the castaways that a re-vote was required, explaining that if another tie occurred, the final outcome would be decided by drawing lots.
During the second voting round, Maxime received 11 votes while Laure received seven, resulting in the immediate elimination of both Maxime and Joana. The decisive shift occurred when Jacques and Clémentine changed their votes. Jacques explained that he had promised Vincent to protect him, while Clémentine stated that she had every right to change her mind.
Reflecting on his quick exit, Maxime sighed that he had not come to leave after three days, adding that he had a heavy heart, had not expected the outcome, and found the result hard to swallow. Joana, frustrated by the sudden elimination, left the council fire while describing the situation as a mess with barely masked irony.
However, the pair's adventure may not be over. A preview for the upcoming second episode revealed that Maxime and Joana will be offered a second chance on Exile Island, provided they do not turn on each other first.
