Mariska Hargitay brought her entire family to the red carpet at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, arriving with husband Peter Hermann and their three children ahead of her hosting duties at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
The Law & Order: SVU star, 62, wore a plunging red sequin dress with a dramatic feathered train. She posed alongside Hermann, 59, sons August, 20, and Andrew, 14, and daughter Amaya, 15.
Hargitay matched with Amaya, whom she adopted in 2011, as her daughter wore a matching sequin red gown with red heels. Andrew, adopted within six months of Amaya, and August wore suits with bow ties for the occasion.
Hargitay's hosting turn marked the first time a woman has led the Emmys ceremony in 15 years.
Widow's Bay sweeps the comedy categories
Apple TV's horror comedy Widow's Bay was the biggest winner of the night, taking home all six awards it was nominated for, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The show beat out Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo's Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking.
Widow's Bay is set in a fictional New England island town afflicted by a centuries-old curse that brings supernatural evils upon its residents.
Series creator Katie Dippold accepted the Outstanding Comedy Series award and also won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode "Welcome to Widow's Bay." Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the same episode.
Matthew Rhys makes Emmys history
Matthew Rhys, 51, became the first actor to win two leading acting awards in different categories on the same night. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay and, earlier in the evening, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me.
On Widow's Bay, the Welsh actor plays Tom Loftis, the mainland-born mayor of the town, who is initially skeptical of the locals' superstitions about the island's curse. His character is a widower and father to a son, Evan, from his marriage to his late wife, Lauren.
In The Beast in Me, a psychological thriller mini-series, Rhys plays Nile Jarvis, the son of a real estate magnate who moves next door to Aggie Wiggs, played by Claire Danes, in Oyster Bay, New York, to live more secluded with his second wife after allegedly killing his first.
Kate O'Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay, earning the first award of the night. She plays Patricia Moyer, the eccentric assistant to Rhys's character, who is treated as a social outcast by former classmates who believe she lied about being targeted by a serial killer known as the Boogeyman while in high school.
Stephen Root, 74, won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay, beating Colman Domingo for The Four Seasons, Paul W. Downs for Hacks, Harrison Ford for Shrinking, Nick Offerman for Margo's Got Money Troubles, Michael Urie for Shrinking and Tyler James Williams for Abbott Elementary. Root plays Wyck Crawford, an outspoken believer in the town's supernatural history who initially clashes with Rhys's character over his refusal to believe in the curse.
The Pitt dominates the drama field
HBO Max's The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series, the top honor on a night the show earned 25 nominations, more than any other series. It beat The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses and Your Friends and Neighbors. The Pitt and Noah Wyle won the same two honors at last year's ceremony.
Wyle, 55, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the show, beating Sterling K. Brown for Paradise, Gary Oldman for Slow Horses, Mark Ruffalo for Task and Rufus Sewell for The Diplomat. He plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, the show's main protagonist, who deals with trauma and PTSD alongside unresolved post-COVID stress. The Pitt follows healthcare professionals at a Pittsburgh hospital as they juggle personal crises, workplace politics and the emotional toll of treating critically ill patients.
Other major winners
Rhea Seehorn, 54, won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus, beating out Zendaya among others nominated in the category. Jean Smart, 75, won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, her fifth consecutive win in the category and eighth Emmy overall from her 15th nomination. She was presented the award by Zendaya.
Sally Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures. Allison Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat, and Tom Pelphrey won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task.
The Traitors won Outstanding Reality Competition Program, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series. DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
