American pop icon Madonna celebrated her 68th birthday with a private Greek feast in Kouramades on the island of Corfu on Sunday, August 16.
The singer brought together her family, close friends, and professional collaborators for the celebration, where she shared a personal speech reflecting on her life, career, and deep appreciation for her Greek surroundings.
Among those in attendance for the private evening was Newsbeast collaborator Panagiotis Nikolakopoulos, who joined guests gathered along a picturesque cobbled street in the traditional village.
During the gathering, Madonna spoke candidly about her personal journey, remembering people she had met throughout her career and honoring those who are no longer alive. She also expressed gratitude for the continued love she receives from fans around the world.
The artist emphasized that family remains a fundamental part of her life before turning to music, which she described as the driving force behind her path. She explained that music is inextricably linked to love and creation, stating her desire to keep writing and creating because music remains central to her identity.
A central moment of her speech was her tribute to Greece. Madonna expressed her gratitude for spending her birthday on Corfu, describing herself as fortunate to be in a place she called magical and blessed.
Helicopter trip to Meteora
Her celebration on Corfu followed a brief excursion to central Greece two days earlier. On Friday, August 14, Madonna traveled from Corfu to Meteora seeking a quiet experience away from standard summer resort destinations.
The star arrived in Meteora accompanied by a party of approximately 12 people, including her son. The group traveled aboard two helicopters for the afternoon visit.
Madonna spent around three hours in the area, remaining from 16:00 until 19:00. During her stay, she visited the Holy Monastery of Varlaam, which opened its doors exclusively for her party after standard public visiting hours had concluded.
Meteora is famous for its towering sandstone rock formations in central Greece, topped by historic Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The Holy Monastery of Varlaam, established in the 14th century, sits atop a cliff more than 1,800 feet above the Peneus valley.
Greek birthday traditions
A few hours after the party in Corfu, Madonna shared photographs of the evening with her millions of followers on her personal Instagram account. She captioned the images by announcing her birthday and encouraging followers to eat, pray, love, drink, dance, break plates, and feed cats, concluding the message with a Greek flag and a red heart emoji.
Images posted from the event capture the festive atmosphere on the paved alleyways of Kouramades. Madonna appeared wearing a floral dress and a large wreath of pink flowers in her hair.
One photograph shows the singer standing beside her multi-tiered white birthday cake, which was decorated with dozens of lit candles, small stars, and a prominent gold eye at its center.
Another shot captured her gold shoes standing on stone paving covered in broken ceramic plates, showcasing the traditional Greek custom of plate smashing during celebratory dances.
Corfu, an island in the Ionian Sea known for its Venetian architecture and lush greenery, provided the backdrop for the traditional feast. Plate smashing remains a well-known Greek celebratory custom symbolizing joy, while the gold eye design on her cake reflects the traditional Mati symbol used to ward off bad fortune.
