The Regional Government of Loreto in Peru declared Thursday, August 13, as a regional non-working day for public sector employees. The regional holiday commemorates the official certification of the Amazon River as a Natural Wonder of the World by the New 7 Wonders Foundation.
Regional Ordinance N.° 010-2012-GRL-CR established the annual observance across the region. Public sector workers in Loreto automatically receive the day off, while private sector employees must reach a prior agreement with their employers to participate. Employees who take the day off must make up the unworked hours later through advance coordination with their employers.
Amazon River designation and worker rules
The August 13 designation applies only within Loreto and does not extend nationwide. Peru maintains two official national holidays during August. The country observed the Battle of Junin on August 6 and scheduled the Day of Santa Rosa de Lima for August 30.
Peru has five additional national holidays scheduled for the remainder of 2026. The calendar includes the Battle of Angamos on October 8, All Saints' Day on November 1, the Immaculate Conception on December 8, the Battle of Ayacucho on December 9, and Christmas on December 25.
Government statements on holidays and employment
Minister of Labor Juan Sheput addressed proposals concerning national holidays. Sheput stated that the president will neither eliminate nor increase holidays, adding that the proposal document was a draft. In other labor developments, national labor inspection agency Sunafil announced job openings featuring monthly salaries reaching 10,000 Peruvian soles.
