Nearly seven hundred years passed between Pharaonic Egypt and the arrival of Islam during which the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire dominated the land of the pyramids. In that world, born of a unique religious and cultural syncretism, the Coptic community arose. Among the Copts, the symbol of the cross was born, the use of which spread from Alexandria across the Mediterranean. Among these communities developed an art that is unique in the world. The phenomenon of monasticism also originated in the Nile Valley and in these monasteries developed Christian literature written in its own fascinating language.
Despite the threat of growing Islamization of Egypt, the Copts have always considered themselves Egyptian like everyone else. The word ‘Coptic’ comes from the Greek word aigyptios which can be translated as ‘Egyptian’. They are the true heirs of the pharaohs and the classical tradition.
Vicente Barba Colmenero, an expert archaeologist in the Coptic world, brings us closer to knowing the details, history, art and way of life of one of the most fascinating communities in the history of Christianity.
