Designer Miranda Holder reveals why A-listers can’t resist dressing ‘ultra-feminine’

If you’re ready to dive into this snowball trend, here are some simple tips to help you get started, according to Miranda:

1. Start small

“If the closest thing to liquid gender is to dress like an ugly sister in my local pantomime, my advice is to take it slow and start small.

“The world of men’s tailoring, on the other hand, is extremely limited with far fewer options when it comes to colour, silhouette, accessories… everything else.

‘Take the time to find the right one for you, it’s a very personal process and you need to discover not only what fits you well and reflects your personality, but also where the tailoring boundaries lie.

With that in mind, look to accessories as an easy starting point for your new contemporary style. A simple silk scarf tied around the back of the neck is a good place to start, as is more feminine jewelry (like capitalizing on pearls’ tendency to be large), or maybe a little metrosexual makeup.

“It may be my ’80s childhood, but I always think a little bit of expertly applied eyeliner and a little concealer can do wonders. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends for help, finding a good match can be as difficult as mixing – we’re here to help you when needed.’

2. Make simple transactions

Divide your regular clothes into their components and find out which items you can swap for something more feminine.

For example, could your straight-leg jeans be replaced with a 70s-inspired skinny? Can you replace your pinstripe button up with a bow tie silk blouse?

“By focusing on individual elements of your look and taking the time to get used to how they look and feel, this aesthetic becomes much more approachable and less overwhelming.

3. Get inspired

‘Find a stylist and do your research before you start. The options are innumerable, and it’s easy to get discouraged when there are so many.

“It’s going to be a lot of trial and error, so start following the looks you like on platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, or in a private album on your phone.

“When you see a look you like, analyze it and decide what to put in your wardrobe. Pay special attention to people of similar build and height, as you are more likely to work.

4. Experiment

‘This is where the real fun begins. Trendy flavors are waiting for you! The fashion world is literally your oyster.

‘Button? Stay completely neutral, you’re in a whole new field here and it’s time to redefine what’s right for you and what isn’t, with a whole new set of rules – or maybe no rules at all!

“There is so much to think about… the fabric world has just opened up and you can play around with things from lace to chiffon and more.

‘Print and pattern can be your new best friends and an opportunity to get really creative and add a little more personality to your wardrobe, just like color.

‘Color is an effective tool and often lacking in men’s wardrobes and many women – this is your chance to embrace it.

Gather your potential new wardrobe weapons and take some time at home to try and experiment with everything and see what you like.

“Any designer will tell you all too often that the most amazing outfits are born from an experimental combination of the most unlikely pieces: it will work in your favor, so give it a try.”

5. Balance your silhouette

A style rule to keep in mind is to balance the silhouette, so if you’re wearing something looser on one half of your body, keep it slim on the other half.

This can be trickier with the current plus-size trend, so if you want to tap into this look, be sure to show some skin (curling up sleeves, ankles, or a small chest on display is very useful for breaking up the blocky look).

“An ideal women’s dress has movement and curvy lines that you want to emulate instead of wearing something that moves up and down.”

6. Trust is the key

‘Finally a word from someone who has seen countless beautiful models in stunning dresses hanging around the corners, who completely disdains themselves and their clothes: confidence, energy and attitude are everything.

“You have to feel good about yourself and appreciate what you’re wearing, otherwise you won’t be wearing your new image.

‘So take a little more time to fix everything, then stand up and have fun freeing yourself from all the social and tailoring restrictions; I’m sure you’ll be great – you deserve it! ‘
