While James Cameron was shooting the sequel to Avatar, the author of this text managed to finish school, go to college, get a job and leave his parents (and this is the “minimal” plan) – it took 13 years to work on the second part of the cult film. And now the Waterway is finally ready to see the light of day. Its predecessor was the highest-grossing movie in history for over 10 years (excluding a brief pause when the last Avengers took the first line), with $2.8 billion in fees, and is considered one of the movies that fundamentally changed cinema. It is not surprising that the audience is especially looking forward to its sequel. And despite the fact that the premiere of the film is a little more than three months – it is scheduled for December 14, everyone is already discussing it. Will the old heroes return? The events of the second episode of “Avatar” take place more than 10 years after the events of the first movie, as Jake Sully, who takes the form of an avatar, becomes the leader of the Na’vi people and takes on the duty of protection. The Waterway will run for three hours (the first was 2 hours and 42 minutes), and in an interview with Empire, James Cameron preemptively responded to those who thought it was too much for the cinema: “Don’t whine about the length. If you can watch the eight-hour season of the movie in theaters at home in one breath. I can already imagine how the critics wrote: “An unimaginably long three-hour movie!” Stop whining now! My kids can stay in front of the screen for five hours watching TV shows. There must be a social change by now. Don’t worry, you can get up and pee.” The director also shared that if the first episode were a love melodrama, he would have told the sequel more like a family saga: “I’ve decided to give my incredible heroes a family. Therefore, they are in a vulnerable position.” And yes, The In Way of Water, the main characters will become parents.

And in the movie, his character in the first movie – the head of the Avatar program, Dr. Grace Augustine – despite the fact that she died, James Cameron’s favorite Sigourney Weaver will also appear. The director gave her the role of Kiri, the adopted daughter of the main characters, in which the 72-year-old actress was transformed using CGI and Motion Capture technologies.
By the way, Kate Winslet also took part in the project (the director said that a quarter of a century after the Titanic she calmed down, on the contrary, she became more hyperactive) – made a faithful and strong fighter named actress. Pregnant, Ronald fights shoulder to shoulder with his people.

A technological breakthrough was the use of Performance Capture (“capture the acting game”): shooting took place in a special tank capable of holding almost four million liters of water with a wave generator to simulate underwater currents. And the players’ training took place in Hawaii, where they learned how to hold their breath underwater from freediver Kirk Crack, who also trained Tom Cruise for Rogue Nation. For example, Kate Winslet’s recording was 7 minutes 14 seconds.
Why did shooting underwater require such frills? The fact is that water affects weight and reflects light unevenly, which complicates the shooting process quite a lot, and the production of the film was delayed due to the development of necessary technologies, among other things.
