A senior scientist at popular laundry detergent brand Tide shared the right way to use laundry pods, and many got it wrong.

“The best way to use liquid laundry packages is to put them in the drum before adding clothes,” Jessica told Zinna.

He explained that the main reason why liquid laundry packages do not dissolve in washing is incorrect use, such as adding the package before and after the laundry.

Such an application can pose a problem as the package needs as much water contact as possible to dissolve the film.

“People also make the mistake of putting the bins in the dispenser drawer and not behind or under the machine drum.”

But loading the laundry incorrectly is only one of the possible reasons why the waffle isn’t defrosting properly.

Dr. Zinna said the temperature of the washing machine could also be the cause.

If the washing capsules do not dissolve well even after being placed in front of the dirty laundry, it is recommended to switch to warmer water in the winter months.

Dr. Zinna also shared that people have some misconceptions when it comes to washing capsules, especially about being environmentally friendly.

But Dr. Zinna immediately reassured the skeptics that the capsules were the most environmentally friendly forms of laundry detergent on sale today.

“The size allows for the use of more concentrated detergent,” he said. “This means less water in the formulations of cleaning products and therefore less packaging waste and less weight when transporting these products.”

The number of compartments needed to properly clean clothes depends on how dirty the laundry is and the size of the load.

As a general rule, he recommended three compartments for large loads, including linens and blankets, two for medium loads or heavily soiled clothes, and one for a small load.

An expert at Australian consumer company CHOICE has uncovered five common laundry mistakes that thousands of people make unwittingly.

Washing machine and appliance specialist Ashley Iredale said using fabric softener didn’t help the cleaning process, and there was little difference between washing in hot and cold water.

Making these mistakes over and over can affect the overall wash result and machine performance, he explained.

1. Wash with warm water

Although hot water washes clothes better than cold water, Ashley said there is a “marginal difference” between hot and cold water.

He added that the water in Australia isn’t very cold compared to overseas, so it’s better to save energy and money by choosing a cold cycle instead of a hot cycle.

2. Use fabric softener

While many use fabric softeners to keep towels and clothes cool, Ashley recommends using the product infrequently as it doesn’t “contribute” to the cleaning process in any way.

What’s worse is that fabric softeners can also reduce water absorption, which is not ideal when washing towels, and the liquid contributes to foaming in the machine over time.

“Worse still, they reduce the flame retardant’s effect on clothing, so they ban kids’ pajamas altogether, even though everyone has cute baby pictures on their bottles,” Ashley said.

3. Incorrect installation of the machine

Over or underloading the washing machine is another common mistake many people make without realizing it.

‘You are wasting detergent, water and energy by not using your machine very little and efficiently; too much and your clothes may not be clean or you could shorten the life of your car,” Ashley said.

Items should be distributed evenly in the machine and a high load should not fill the entire wash tank.

4. Close the lid between washes

Another common mistake many people make is closing the washing machine door between loads.

The lid or door should always be opened immediately after using the machine to allow the container to dry.

This will reduce the appearance of odors, discoloration and mold over time.

5. Do not put delicate items in the laundry bag

Finally, Ashley said you should always put your delicate laundry in a laundry bag, otherwise you risk bending it and getting damaged.

“These clips on things like bras can also damage other items or get tangled in the seals during washing,” Ashley said.

It also shortens the life of your favorite delicate items.
