Novy Nizhny: a guide for Nizhny Novgorod v 2.0 – atmosphere, wine, food, art

Nizhny Novgorod is changing and developing at such a rate that the guidebooks around it are not only updated, but rewritten every six months. Brains, ambitions, and with them money came to the region (it’s unclear what came first). Behind them, quite logically, business, art, philanthropy were caught. The service and catering sectors have reached their peak, and the dust of domestic production has been thrown over. As in the lectures of Elena Blinovskaya, the process of global transformation was initiated with the principle of “do it first, then solve it”. Oddly enough, it works flawlessly.

And now you are not surprised that Marina Loshak and Mikhail Shvydkoy cleverly argue about borscht at the next table in the restaurant, and Rosatom’s Mayak innovative training academy occupies the most beautiful house on the embankment.

The new Nizhny is no longer about the Chkalov Stairs and the Alfa Future People electronic music festival, St. It’s about gastronomy, street art, local brands and infrastructure solutions that St. Petersburg and Moscow can envy to some extent. Read all this in our new guide to Nizhny Novgorod and keep a list of the best places.

“Cousteau”

Definitely the best seafood in town. From the famous local cod to Far Eastern scallops. In interpretations for every taste: from sushi and sashimi to grilled and risotto. Clear combinations in a skilled performance. The smoked unagi eel, avocado, and stracciatella salad is worth a separate ingredient. Cons: No terrace. A few tables overlooking a pretty busy street don’t count.

Address: st. Alekseevskaya, 6

Yale

An obvious treasure trove of Rozhdestvenskaya Street, still the center of the city’s loudest drinking spots. Don’t be afraid of tram tracks, souvenir shops or “Shashlik” signs next door. Do not hesitate to go up to the second floor, there you will find a picture from Pinterest: plaster from the 19th century, precious antiques from France and the Netherlands, a magnificent combination of classicism and minimalism. And modern Russian cuisine and the author’s presentation of each dish will add to the overall wow effect.

Address: st. Christmas, 30

Mitrich

One of the oldest steakhouses in the city, consistently popular for over eight years. On weekdays, they like to hold business meetings here, and on weekends – for relaxing with the whole family (fortunately, there is a nursery where you can take your favorite kid to enjoy the canonical rib eye steak with a glass of Argentinian malbec).

Address: st. Kovalikhinskaya, 8

Negroni Bar and Enoteca

Opposite the Nizhny Novgorod Comedy Theater is a bohemian bar where people go for a drink after a show or an aperitif before a party. Below in the basement is the enoteca room for indoor wine tastings (more than 350 bottles from all over the world, the collection is updated and replenished almost every week).

Address: st. Georgian, 30

honest

Franky’s is a legendary bar that still makes some of the most serious cocktails in town. It’s funny how locals find it too touristy and tourists too authentic. At the same time, both they and others continue to visit him with enviable regularity.

Address: st. Zvezdinka, 10

dodici

A famous place, one of the first (if not the first) wine bars in town. An oasis of room for aesthetes in the middle of the aforementioned Rozhdestvenskaya Street. Dodici will probably be in all guidebooks without our commentary, but it would be awkward not to mention it at all.

“Separated Neighborhoods”

The coolest project for the restoration of historical districts in the center of Nizhny. Its conditional center is the quarter of the Three Saints – 28 historic wooden houses within the borders of Novaya, Korolenko and Slavyanskaya streets. There are almost daily activities in the project, from excursions to fairs and exhibitions, so just follow the news on their social networks. We recommend going for a walk in the company of one of the local guides – all very charismatic guys.

“The Power of the Wind”

For many Muscovites (especially the residents of the Garden Ring), the romantic phrase “the power of the wind” has long been closely associated with sailing and fashion races, in which heroes of gossip or brilliant journalists took part. Now there is a city yacht of the same name in Nizhny. It is even more interesting to look at the houses on the embankment and the Chkalov Stairs from the water. The best time for a walk is six o’clock in the evening to catch the sunset and take a million photos against its background on the forbidden social network.

set Fedorovsky

It’s the city’s most non-touristy embankment, where locals love to walk slowly. Stylish and functional zoning (children exercise separately, separately) and an amphitheater descending directly into the water. The embankment is located on a hill and therefore provides a picturesque view of the water, bridges and the opposite shore.

futuro

A very stylish space in the aesthetically dilapidated interior of the former tenement house of the City Society (by the way, the building is an architectural monument). There are exhibitions of both local artists and international writers. If nothing remarkable is on display, you can at least drop by for the great “Stories”.

Tickets can be purchased from the website.

“Shopping centre”

The building of the Nizhpoligraph publishing house in Nizhny Novgorod is home to the city’s youngest and largest multimedia space. The project was created last year by the Dreamlaser studio specifically for the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod. You can see the light installation of Sila Sveta until 14 August.

Tickets can be purchased from the website.

Gotia Art

Working under the pseudonym Gotia, Egor Tarazanov is a young and talented artist from Nizhny Novgorod, whose work is scattered on social networks and memes. In each of his pictures, popular quotes from songs, books, peoples, funny phrases – in general, anything you want to throw in a friendly conversation in Telegram. If Egor sells his works on banned social networks and writes in advance, you can ask to visit him at the workshop.

Nikita Nomerz

Nikita Kuznetsov, aka Nikita Nomez, is one of the most famous street artists in Nizhny Novgorod, whose fame has already spread beyond the city limits. His work has been exhibited all over the world and sold at the Vladey auction. He also created a street art festival where dozens of original works appeared on the walls of his hometown’s homes. “Hunting” them all over the Down is an especially exciting task.
