A doctor has uncovered the disgusting reason why you should never use a hand dryer and always opt for a paper towel or handshake instead.
Epidemiologist Dr Eric Feigl-Ding, a member of the WHO’s COVID-19 mortality committee, shared a TikTok video originally published by US company Phone Soap, showing the effects of hand drying against hand dryer use.
In the clip, a man tests several Petri dishes to see how many microbes grow when incubated for three days.

In the clip, a man tests several Petri dishes to see how many microbes grow when incubated for three days.
Squeezing the left hand did not allow anything to grow in the Petri dish, while placing a Petri dish under the towel showed massive bacterial growth in just three days.
A similar level of germ arose in a gas station dryer, while a Dyson airblade from the cinema was just as bad, but still saw significantly more growth than a rocking petri dish.
Dr. Feigl-Ding shared the video, writing: ‘Please Note – DO NOT USE TOWELS IN THE BATHROOM. Research shows that these dryers absorb and expel fecal aerosols. Shake your dry hands instead”.
It comes after a California woman warned people to beware of covered towels in public restrooms by sharing a disgusting photo of what she believes are potentially harmful bacteria and fungi that can be blown onto your skin every time you use it.

Waving his hands to the left did not allow anything to grow (pictured), a hand dryer from the same position saw a large amount of bacteria appear.

A similar level emerged in a gas station dryer, a Dyson air knife in the movie theater wasn’t all that bad—it was still so much more than a dry smoothie.
Nicholas Ward took to Facebook to share the disturbing results of an experiment.
The photo he posted shows a petri dish full of fungi and bacteria after just three minutes on the towel.
The picture shows a petri dish with various things that expands considerably after just 48 hours.

He explained that the dish contains “several strains of potentially pathogenic fungi and bacteria” that reach the hands of people using towels behind closed doors.
What are pathogenic bacteria and fungi?
Pathogenic bacteria and fungi are those that can cause disease.
Many bacteria, such as those found naturally in the body, including acidophilus, are harmless, but about 100 species can cause disease in humans.
While there are about 300 different types of fungi that are pathogenic to humans, some, like most fungi, are harmless.
In his paper, Nichole Ward made it clear that although both fungi and bacteria can grow in the petri dish, they are simply “probably” pathogenic and may actually be harmless.
Pathogenic fungi and bacteria are the ones that cause the disease.
“I put the open bowl in a closed hand dryer in a public restroom for a total of 3 minutes. Yes only 3.
“NEVER dry your hands with those things again,” she added.
Bacteria spread more easily when your hands are wet, so if you’re nervous and don’t dry them properly, you may not even bother to wash your hands.
Instead, it’s best to shake it dry or use paper towels.
Researchers at the University of Leeds in the UK have previously called for a ban on compressed air hand dryers from hospital bathrooms because they blow bacteria out of the room.
They found high levels of dangerous bacteria that cause blood poisoning, pneumonia and gastroenteritis when desiccants are used.
They wrote in the Journal of Hospital Infection that dryers, which can leave bacteria on the floor five times more than paper towels, should be purchased from hospitals.
Scientists from Leeds also found that a paper towel for drying hands in 2020 was “significantly” more effective than a hand dryer at removing viruses such as COVID-19.
In the study, they found that 10 of the 11 surfaces touched by someone who used a hand dryer showed significantly more contamination than those who used paper towels.
Scientists say hand drying is important to minimize the spread of dangerous germs.
