It is probably the greenest lager in the world… a beer served in wooden bottles.

And the Carlsberg fiber bottle should also keep the contents cooler than the cans or glass.

The experimental bottles have a plant-based coating which according to the Danish brewer “protects the flavor and carbonation”.

The indoor beer is also greener, as it is made with organic barley to reduce its impact on nature.

Sam Johnson of Carlsberg said, “The bottle is the result of years of passion, hard work and collaboration, and another step forward in our journey to reduce the impact of our packaging.

“Putting these bottles in the hands of consumers to experience them firsthand is the next stage of development and we are thrilled to be part of the experimentation.”

The bottles look set to be collectible, with just 100 being distributed in the UK via social media.

But the brewer hopes to roll them out globally in the “next few years”. They are still covered with a traditional lid, but Carlsberg plans to replace them with a greener alternative soon.

Experts estimate that drinking a few bottles of imported lager every day can add a ton of CO2 to a drinker’s annual carbon footprint.

Carlsberg says its greener bottle is part of its goal of reducing emissions created by producing regular glass bottles by 80%.

The fiber bottles will be available from tomorrow throughout Western Europe.
