Experts say Princess Diana ‘sent secret messages’ in dresses like her revenge gown

A fashion expert has said that Princess Diana’s most iconic look has hidden meanings.

Fashion reporter Eloise Moran talked about some of Diana’s most memorable outfits on ITV’s Lorraine this morning, and how they allude to how she felt at the time.

The reporter and writer revealed hidden messages in the clothing, including the princess’s black sheepskin sweater and the infamous “revenge dress” she wore that same night, when Prince Charles openly confessed to her adultery.

Eloise, author of The Lady Di Look Book: What Diana Was Trying to Tell Us With Her Clothes, has also seen tributes from contemporary royalty to the late princess.

Fashion journalist Eloise Moran says iconic outfits such as Princess Diana’s black sheepskin sweater (pictured) that she wore to a polo match in the 1980s have hidden meanings.

Diana’s iconic “revenge dress” was revealed on the night in 1994 when Prince Charles publicly admitted that he had committed adultery in their marriage.

After her divorce from Prince Charles, Diana chose to wear more non-British designers like Versace. She was also more likely to wear high heels, which she avoided to avoid looking taller than she was when dating Prince Charles.

She spotted a stunning white dress with black polka dots worn by Kate Middleton at Royal Ascot last week and said the Duchess of Cambridge “pays direct homage” to a dress worn by her deceased mother-in-law at the same event in 1988.

Eloise, who runs the @ladydirevengelooks Instagram account, released her book after realizing that a new generation of royal fans hailed Diana as a style icon.

According to Eloise, Diana’s discomfort as an elderly member of the royal family came to light when she wore a red wool sweater to a polo match in 1980.

Seeing the new Prince Charles playing in the game, Diana wore the Warm & Wonderful jersey, which was printed with a white sheep but with a single black sheep in the middle.

Eloise believes this choice of clothing was a conscious choice of Diana, who from the very beginning felt like a “black sheep” in the royal family.

Speaking to host Lorraine Kelly, she said:[Diana] He was new to the real scene, and I think he felt a bit of a stranger.”

After Lorraine wondered if the black sheepskin sweater was an intentional message, Moran added that Diana wore it again when she was out for a walk with Sarah Ferguson.

“The two of them were on the polo field and you’d think they’d feel a little like that,” Eloise suggested, joking that they were “the bad couple.”

Speaking of another iconic aspect of Diana when she was pregnant with Prince William, Lorraine noted that the princess said she “could still find her feet”.

According to Eloise, the fashion choices she made during pregnancy gave her a second look at her inner thinking at the time.

The author explains: ‘It’s sad that she was dealing with an eating disorder at the time and was a little worried.

She was known as ‘Shy Di’ for always keeping her head down.”

Eloise showed a photo of the princess in a green maternity dress with a white collar and white dots on her polo shirt, noting that this was her “typical” look.

Eloise noted that after Princess Diana’s separation from Prince Charles, her dressing style entered an era of “revenge”.

Eloise focused on the “revenge dress” she wore the night Prince Charles first confessed to adultery in 1994, stating that the princess never intended to wear it at first.

The striking black bardot neck dress was designed by lesser-known Greek fashion designer Christina Stambolian, but Diana originally planned to wear Valentino.

However, after she leaked the details of her dress to the press, the princess, who “loves the element of surprise”, came out with an Ibex dress instead.

“It was a message,” said Lorraine about the timing of the gorgeous dress. [Charles] and to the world.’

After leaving the royal family, Diana was seen taking advantage of her freedom among other non-British designers like Versace.

Eloise stepped out in a purple Versace dress with matching purple Jimmy Choo heels and said Diana developed an “international look.”

She said: “She’s so skinny, you can tell she’s not afraid to show her body more.”

The reporter also noted that after breaking up with Charles, Diana wore heels more often because she didn’t want to appear taller than her during their marriage.

“I don’t think he wants to hurt his ego,” she said.

Eloise added: “This is the ultimate act of revenge.”
