From ‘Kill Bill’ to ‘American Psycho’: How musicians refer to cult movies

Popular artists often draw inspiration from masterpieces of world cinema and broadcast visions of their favorite movies through music videos. And no, this is definitely not plagiarism, as many think! This is a tribute to famous directors and their work. We’ve gathered nine references to cult movies that you might not have noticed before.

In February, British rapper Slowthai released Tyron, featuring tracks by Skepta, A$AP Rocky and Denzel Curry. He subsequently released two videos for Tyrone (artist’s real name) Mazza (with A$AP Rocky) and Canceled (with Skepta). The latter was based on the films American Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Mac Miller – Personal Care

The reference to this music video by Mac Miller was Quentin Tarantino’s legendary movie Kill Bill. The singer completely repeated the scene where the heroine of Uma Thurman tries to get out of a wooden box.

Iggy Azalea – Fantasy (feat. Charli XCX)

In Fancy’s video, Iggy Azalea appeared as the main character in the movie Clueless. I even managed to completely copy the legendary yellow suit with a skirt. We hope that Kim Kardashian appreciated it (in one of the interviews, the star said that this is one of her favorite movies).

Kanye West – Fade

When this video was posted, everyone on the web started discussing Teana Taylor’s very sexy dance, but few saw in the video a reference to the finale of the 1983 movie Flashdance.

Madonna – material girl

It seems that everyone has seen the movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. And Marilyn Monroe’s pink dress to which she sang “Diamonds is a Girl’s Best Friend” became a cult and forever entered the history of cinema. Thus, Madonna paid tribute to the main icon of the 20th century in the Material girl video.

Tupac – California Love (feat. Dr. Dre)

Tupac Shakur is a true rap legend of the 90s. He has had a huge impact on many contemporary artists including Eminem, Snoop Dog, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Kendrick Lamar. And every self-respecting hip-hop fan has at least one T-shirt with his image in their wardrobe. In 1995, the West Coast rapper released a music video for the track California Love, inspired by the 1985 action movie Mad Max 3: Under the Thunderdome.

Ariana Grande

After the release of this clip, a lot of memes and jokes appeared on the Web, and all of them Kris Jenner starred there as the mother of the singer (according to the plot, she very touchingly filmed the performance of her daughter). And while everyone was actively discussing the appearance of the head of the Kardashian clan, we immediately noticed a few references to cult movies of the 2000s: Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 to 30 and Bring It On.
