Animator Buck Woodall is suing Disney for allegedly stealing the idea for the Moana cartoon and its sequel. He went to court.
In the lawsuit, Woodall claims that the company appropriated portions of the script he wrote for the animated film Buckeyes for Moana 2. The man states that the main ideas of the story loved by millions of people completely copied his own idea. Specifically, the animated film is set in a legendary Polynesian village and revolves around young people trying to save their home by encountering spirit animals along the way.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit follows a November hearing in which his initial appeal was denied due to the statute of limitations. However, the release of the second part of the cartoon gave the animator a reason to contest copyrights again.
Moana 2 was released late last year and became Disney’s highest-grossing animated film in the last five years. The action will unfold three years after the events of the first episode, which was released in 2016. The story follows the adventures of Moana and Maui as they work together to find the lost Oceania.
