Biomedical scientist Kellie Leonard took to TikTok to reveal where the women lying on their backs to give birth came from, and it turns out it’s pretty scary.
Despite popular belief, women haven’t always lay on their backs to give birth, and people have just discovered the scary reason why it has become the perfect position for labor.
A journalist and biomedical scientist specializing in histopathology, Kellie Leonard often likes to debunk women’s health myths for her 50,000 followers on TikTok.
But in her recent music video, she really blew people away when it came to giving birth.
After conducting her extensive research, Kellie shared why women lie on their backs during labor and it’s not just to help midwives.

In the video that has now racked up 804,000 views, the biomedical scientist explained, “So the reason we give birth on the back is because of a male sprain, and in case you didn’t know, I’m a biomedical scientist exposing women’s health myths. .
“Before the 17th century, it was actually a very common place for women to give birth on all fours, squatting or even standing.
“In fact, it was quite rare for them to be lying on their backs. So, lying on your back can lengthen labor a bit due to the way our pelvis is.
“So it goes against our natural biology.”
I bet you’re wondering why do women often lie on their backs to give birth? Well, that all changed about 300 years ago.

Kellie shared: “Well, King Louis XIV has arrived, this guy had a thing for women who give birth.
“He had 22 children with their wives and lovers and asked all of them to lie on their backs to be able to see better.
“It was implemented in Western culture and voila, we’re still doing it today.”
And the “disturbing” behavior of the longest-lived monarch did not stop there, with a study that even went so far as to define King Louis XIV as a “pervert”.
According to public health articlesaid: “Some scholars argue that the change in birth position was a perverse whim of King Louis XIV.
“Since Louis XIV wanted to watch women give birth, he was frustrated by the blurred vision of childbirth when it took place on a birthing stool and promoted the new recumbent position. He also insisted that male acoucheurs (male midwives) attend births.
Stunned by the discovery, many women were puzzled as to why and took to commenting on clips of Kellie to express their thoughts.
One person commented, “It makes a lot of sense to use gravity to get the baby out easier instead of pushing so hard.”
Another user added, “I refused to go back with mine, so embarrassing. I was on all fours in a birthing tub.”
As a third person put it: “And this is how a decision by someone in power can change the world.”
Someone else gasped: “And I wonder why my labor lasted 43 hours.”
Meanwhile, a fifth user expressed: “I gave birth standing … it took me seven minutes.”
