PEOPLETALK’s new columnist and film critic Artem Remizov says which foreign films will be released in Russian cinemas before the end of 2024

The world of cinema is vast: films and TV series are released every year, many of which have never been widely broadcast and remain unknown to the audience. And it’s simply not possible to see them all. In order not to get lost in diversity, we must be like pearl divers. After all, as a rule, the viewer does not like to suffer in the choice and goes into it, and of course there are often projects with a powerful advertising campaign. But good promotion does not guarantee quality and star participation.

Making a movie is half the job; The creators still have to work hard to bring the movie to the audience. Especially when we consider the restrictions in the countries and companies that produce and distribute the films.

Why are some foreign films officially shown in Russian distribution, while other high-profile premieres, on the contrary, are released on the pre-show service? What new movies will be available to watch in Russia before the end of 2024?

It is not that easy to understand all the intricacies of the film industry, but we decided to dot all the i’s.

Here is Artem Remizov, the new The Fashion Vibes columnist, film critic and author of the Telegram channel “Remizorro”. To see”.

Over the past few years, the online movie industry has worked not only to create its own original series, but also to combat piracy. After its official release, it became a major studio movie and it was quite the event. For example, the release of Denis Villeneuve’s first Dune movie.

While many major films have now left our market and pre-show services are only gaining momentum, we still have films being released that have been purchased for official distribution. Yes, these are films of a smaller caliber, not blockbusters (although the fourth part of John Wick will argue with this), but still.

How do they look at our box office? All of these movies are mostly produced by Warner Bros. It is worth noting that it has nothing to do with big studios such as. Usually these are small offices that can sell films in the CIS.

In addition, many of our distributors have legal entities in other countries and are able to purchase them for these markets and then “spread” them further, including in Russia.

Today we decided to highlight such films that will be officially released here, and among them there are many major European and world films that are ready to excite the major awards film season in the future.

“The Other Man”, dir. Aaron Shimberg

Release date: October 3

Distributor: “Volga”

Sebastian Stan became famous among our audiences for his role as Bucky the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now Marvel is gone, but Stan remains. And not only did he stay, he became stronger as an actor, receiving his first award at the Berlin Film Festival this year for his role in “The Other Man”. There he plays a young man who decides to undergo surgery on his appearance in order to become an actor. But all this only aggravates the problem and does not help it. If suddenly you watched another festival called “Matter”, then this will be a more realistic and darker version of the film based on a similar theme – about yourself, your appearance and how the world around you greets you. He sends you off with his clothes and them.

“Anora”, dir. Sean Baker

Release date: October 17

Distributor: “Cinema Atmosphere”

The winner of the 77th Cannes Film Festival managed to become a truly popular film in the cinema community and plans to do the same with the Russian audience. There are prerequisites: We have a lot of actors in the squad: from Mark Eidelstein (the big movie “Before the Century” and the no less important series “Pharma”), for whom 2024 is a very productive year, to Yura Borisov. and Daria Ekamasova. Under the same premises, statements can also be written that “Anora” is a modern and younger version of the movie “Pretty Woman” with Julia Roberts. We will see how it will be in October after the movie is released.

“Lee”, dir. Ellen Keras

Release date: November 21

Distributor: World Pictures

Kate Winslet can be safely called our people’s favorite: many people know her, so a new film with her in the title role could become an event. Moreover, the British actor plays the famous photographer Lee Miller, who became famous as a Vogue correspondent during World War II. Many have been muted in their praise for the film throughout this calendar year, but have also sung Winslet’s praises. Let’s hope it’s not all in vain.

“Meeting”, dir. Edward Berger

Release date: November 21

Distributor: “Cinema Atmosphere”

Last year, Edward Berger’s film All Quiet on the Western Front received a surprise award at the Oscars, winning in the categories of Best Foreign Language Film, Best Music and Best Cinematography. This year, the famous director is releasing a new movie called a political-religious thriller about the election of the new Pope. Ralph Fiennes, who has many acting nominations, stars in the leading role. The film is called tense, with an unexpected, twisted plot. It’s best to take your mind off what’s going on in the world and experience safe excitement.

“Maria”, dir. Pablo Larrain

Release date: November 28

Rental agency: Heaven»

Although it is unlikely that Angelina Jolie will win, it is most likely the film for which she will receive her third acting Oscar nomination. This is a biopic about the life of opera diva Maria Callas, who has just retired and is looking for a new life without music. Most of those who watched the film say that the plot is simple and not very eventful, but almost everyone praises Jolie’s work. This was obvious because Larrain is a director who knows how to work with women. Its track record includes Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart and now Angelina for whom this movie is worth the wait.

“The Adventures of Paddington 3”

It’s probably the kindest and most family-friendly movie that should hit our theaters before the end of 2024, and it’s nice to end our list with this one. The charming and adorable Paddington bear will go to Peru this time, and of course adventure awaits him here. Frankly, there is no need to say more here. If you have seen the previous two parts, you will definitely move on to the third.

As you can see, we will have many official broadcasts featuring Hollywood stars, artists from our industry and even cute animated characters. So go to the cinema, support the official release and watch what you want.
