In the 30 years since its release, The Shawshank Redemption has received many awards. And this is no coincidence. The film crew made every possible effort to ensure the good of the footage.
On the anniversary of the film, September 23, 2024, director Frank Darabont explained to The Daily Beast how Andy Dufresne’s escape was actually filmed.
The sewer scene shows the character’s metaphorical moment of purification. The hero goes through the sewer and finds himself free in the rain. Who would have thought during filming that the contents of the pipes and the pool were not fake at all?

“We had to dam the river to raise the water level and fill it with cow manure. Tim Robbins is a real trooper. It was disgusting to slide down the pipe into that mud!” Darabont said. Still, they tried to take some precautions. The pool was filled with sewage as well as disinfectant.
Frank Darabont wrote and directed two other adaptations of Stephen King books (1999’s The Green Mile and 2007’s The Fog). He recently retired but returned to direct two episodes of the final season of Stranger Things.
