We decided to share proven facts that you may not believe.
Babies have more bones than adults
At birth, babies have about 300 bones and adults have 206. As children grow, some bones begin to fuse together. For example, babies have soft, empty spaces in their heads that “close” as they age, as the bones in their heads fuse to form a skull similar to an adult’s.
Jellyfish make holes inside themselves
There is a jellyfish (Mnemiopsis, the warty jelly comb or sea squirt) that has no anus. When too much waste builds up in its body, it makes a hole somewhere in its body, expels the waste, and the hole closes up again.
Galapagos tortoises were not scientifically recognized for a long time because they were eaten.
It took a long time for the Giant Tortoise to be scientifically recognized because it had to be taken to London to be catalogued. The Galapagos tortoise was discovered by Spanish sailors in 1535. However, they were so tasty and filling that they could not survive the long sea voyages because sailors ate them.
Children’s Crusade
The Children’s Crusade was a Holy Crusade. The children’s goal was to capture the Holy Land of the Catholics and to make amends for the failures of their fathers and brothers. Many of the children died before they even made it out of Europe.
The Children’s Crusade of 1212, led by 12-year-old Stephen of Cloys, was approved by neither King Philip nor the Pope, but this did not stop Stephen and his army of children (who, according to legend, numbered up to 30,000).
Gummy worms have more bones than real ones
The main ingredient in gummy worms (unless they are vegan) is gelatin. Gelatin is made from animal bones, skin, and cartilage that are processed to produce collagen. True worms do not have bones, as they are invertebrates and actually have a hydrostatic skeleton.
Animals see completely different colors than humans
Many animals can see colors that humans cannot. For example, birds, reptiles, bees, and some bony fish can detect ultraviolet light. Humans and bees can look at the same flower and see different colors. And dogs and cats see fewer colors than we do.
Sharks are older than Saturn’s rings
The age of Saturn’s rings is estimated to be no more than 400 million years. In comparison, sharks appeared at the end of the Ordovician period, that is, about 450 million years ago.
