For example, if you don’t understand the complex and expensive dishes at some popular metropolitan restaurants, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should go there.

Especially if everything around will also take you into the atmosphere of the Soviet era. Strangely enough, there are not many cafes and restaurants in Moscow where you can taste the food of those times, but we know the addresses of all of them for sure. “Dr. Zhivago”

Dr. Zhivago is perhaps one of the most famous Russian restaurants in Moscow. The first is located in the very center of the capital, directly opposite the Red Square. Secondly, there they cook real Russian and Soviet cuisine with soups, cutlets and pies. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you are immediately transported to the 80s. The main hall is made in a snow-white color with bright red details. Pictures of famous 20th century artists such as Malevich, Samokhvalov, Deineka and Petrov-Vodkin hang on the walls. The second hall, which is more intimate, is made in the Palekh formal style. Red cavalry are depicted on the black walls and a large ruby ​​star is on the ceiling. Despite its popular location on the Patriarch’s Ponds, the restaurant is made in true Soviet style. The interior of “Marie Vanna” takes you to a typical Soviet apartment with floral tablecloths, sideboards and nesting dolls. As you can imagine, the kitchen here is also suitable for this. If you suddenly think that everyone in the USSR can afford to go to a restaurant or a cafe like Praga on the Arbat, you are very wrong. As a rule, in the Soviet Union people went to public canteens. The food there was delicious but most importantly cheap. And if you’re wondering how, go to GUM – there’s the “Dining Room No. 57”. The atmosphere is of course not what it used to be, but the idea is clear. It has only one drawback – a long queue between locals and tourists. But do not be surprised, in the Soviet Union it was several times larger.

Central House of Writers’ restaurant is a place with a special atmosphere. First operating during the Soviet era, the institution has hosted Mikhail Sholokhov, Konstantin Simonov, Mikhail Zoshchenko, and other writers and poets. Secondly, here you can try real time-tested Russian and Soviet cuisine. Our favorites include the crawfish jelly, the sorrel cabbage soup, and of course the Kremlin cheesecakes. It is a must see place for those who are interested in historical subjects.
