The triumph of cinema: How was the 45th Moscow International Film Festival and how was it commemorated?

The week of April 20-27 in the capital took place strictly under the auspices of cinema, thanks to the 45th Moscow International Film Festival.

It would not be a lie if we say that each project is worthy of the golden “St. George” in the main competition, where 222 films from 64 countries and 11 films from 16 countries were presented this year.

But the award was still taken by the best of the best – it was Chilean director Francisco Paparella’s film “Three Brothers” (represented Russia), which was selected by an expert jury headed by Rahul Ravel, one of India’s leading cinematographers, actress Svetlana Ivanova’s jury).

Lou Halai’s short film “Everything” and the documentary “History of Russian Prisons” attracted attention at the award ceremony that took place the previous day on April 27 at the Rossiya Theater. Vladimir Central” by Yulia Bobkova and “The Edge of the Broken Moon” by Svetlana Samoshina as part of the Russian Premieres competition. Of course, there were also some special awards – Silver St. George went to the film “FI 1.618” by Canadian director Teodor Ushev, and the award for his contribution to world cinema was awarded to Karen Shakhnazarov.

What is interesting is the renaissance of the young program “First Series”, in which serials are shown. And if there was no excitement behind it before, then this year the rules of the game have changed: your obedient film editor personally watched how it happened in the halls at Mir! Friendship! Gum!”, “Cat” and other shows run out of space. And this year, Russian festival cinema also received special attention, either because the program was not filled with foreign films in the usual way, or because it seems that today it has finally found its audience. For example, the main competition included the films “First Love” by Svetlana Proskurina and “14+: Sequence” by Andrey Zaitsev.

The latter became the sequel to “14+”, which was released almost eight years ago, and Gleb Kalyuzhny returned to the role, and if in 2015 his name is still not very well known in film circles, today this man is expected everywhere. It was much more interesting to watch the acting transformations on the big screen.

In the meantime, until the new annual meetings MIFF!
