Delia Smith says she has ‘nothing to give’ before retiring

Before retiring, Delia Smith said she “had nothing to give” and “didn’t want to invent new recipes for the rest of her life.”

The legendary British chef started his career at the age of 21 working in a small London restaurant, and his first television appearance came in the early 1970s on BBC East’s Look East.

The 80-year-old conductor said he quit television in 2013 and felt “a little too old” to do more television, but didn’t rule out another gig.

In an interview with Platinum magazine, Delia said that although she did not get bored with her career, she felt that all recipe ideas were published after 50 years in the industry.

“It wasn’t because I was bored, but I felt like I had nothing left to give,” he said. “Honestly, if you’ve been making recipes all these years, that’s all.

“The recipes cost a dime, and I didn’t see the point of spending my whole life inventing more.”

Famous for her no-nonsense recipes, the chef says that although she admires the 87-year-old Mary Berry, she thinks she has “enough on her plate” and won’t be on television anytime soon.

Delia published her first cookbook, How to Cheat at Cooking, in 1971 and has become a household name with her TV cooking shows.

She has since sold more than 21 million copies of her cookbooks, and her name saw her become synonymous with home cooking with “Delia” in the Collins English Dictionary in 2001.

The devout Catholic and Norwich City stockholder was once thought to have such an impact on the country’s taste buds that the term “Delia effect” entered the Collins English Dictionary in 2001 after sales of the blueberries he had seen on television quadrupled.

He was honored by the Queen in 2017 and received the Order of Honor for his culinary services.

After taking credit at Buckingham Palace, he took the opportunity to complain about the modern kitchen, calling it ‘too flamboyant, too chef’.

He said: ‘The kitchen is so spicy, so chef-like – if I have another six-sauce dish in front of me, I go crazy. I can’t, I can’t.

“The pleasure of going to a very special restaurant and having a very special meal disappeared years ago. It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t try to be theater on a plate… I don’t like it at all”.

Despite her success, however, Delia believes there are more successful chefs than she is, and she tells the broadcast that she thinks Jamie Oliver and Nigella have surpassed her in terms of fame.

When asked what my next step was, the chief refused to write a novel or autobiography, but would consider writing another non-fiction book after the last science book called You Matter.
