SAG-AFTRA recommends the introduction of the Respect for Marriage Act

SAG-AFTRA on Tuesday welcomed the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law today. The two-party law was repealed after Roe v. Wade went through the US Supreme Court, raising concerns that the court may later rule that states can make same-sex and interracial marriage illegal.

“The passage of the Respect for Marriage Act will ensure that federal and state governments continue to recognize and respect all marriages without discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, national origin, ethnicity or race. This legislation is an important step in protecting LGBTQ+ Americans who remain vulnerable to discrimination in their daily lives,” the guild said in a statement. “The Respect for Marriage Act will not only bring comfort to SAG-AFTRA members, but to millions of families across the country.”

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, National Executive Director of SAG-AFTRA, who attended the signing of the bill, said: “I am honored and pleased to attend this historic bill. Watching President Biden sign the Respectful Marriage Act is a moment I will never forget. As someone who has personally campaigned for marriage equality for over 30 years, this legislation means everything. Today, Congress and President Biden removed any doubt about the federal requirement for respect and recognition of same-sex marriage, an extraordinary achievement. The bipartisan majority that passed this law is a sign of the progress we have made as a society; The fact that we need this law at all shows how far we still have to go.”

The DGA and IATSE praised Congress for passing the law last week.
