Royal historian Jessica Storoshchuk told Page Six, “Members of the British royal family are required to travel in a black suit in the event of the death of a monarch or other high-ranking member of the royal family during their travels.”
This rule came after Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, died during a royal visit to Kenya in 1952. At that time, he did not have a suitable mourning suit with him.
“After the unexpected death of her father, she had to wait on the runway on the plane until a matching black outfit was brought for her to change into. It’s much easier to keep it in your travel wardrobe than it is to wait.”
