British fans of Last week tonight theme with John Oliver saved a 25 minute clip of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill going down a water slide The Benny Hill Show.
The HBO host urged British broadcaster Sky to cut his segment about the British monarchy and said he would replace it with the recurring comedy clip if the Comcast-owned company did so.
Sky decided against the clip and viewers were shown the extract.
“To an extent that Americans may not realize that the monarchy is not a universally loved institution,” the Briton said last night, before pointing to some Scottish and Irish football fans who “Lizzie’s in a box” during matches. sang
“You can say it’s tasteless. You can also say that it is very funny. Two things can be true,” he said.
“Even we got into trouble when Sky TV in the UK made some pretty good-natured jokes that we made when she died. Who knows if the report will even be shown there on TV. In fact, in case they refuse, we have prepared an alternative program for them that will replace this story with a 25-minute loop [a] Video of Winston Churchill going backwards down a Benny Hill style water slide so they have nothing to see,” he added.
One of those jokes, broadcast after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, wasn’t even a joke.
One of the lines was that the United Kingdom was “devastated by the shocking death of a 96-year-old woman from natural causes”, which Oliver noted as a fact given with some poor emphasis.
The segment itself, while controversial to some of the more conservative royals, was more informative. It highlighted the challenges facing the British royal family as a growing number of countries vote to remove the monarch as their head of state.
He also highlighted some of the “heinous atrocities” committed by the British, such as the crushing of the Mau Mau rebellion by the Kikuyu people of Kenya, which took place under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, noting that how much specific family members earn while not paying taxes.
“You’re like a human appendix. We haven’t needed them in a long time and there are compelling reasons for surgical removal,” he said.
He admitted he was in the minority.
