Here is a guide for those who think we no longer need feminism.

In her ongoing Feminists comic, author Lauraine Meyer explains feminism with simplicity and pedagogy. An ideal book for teenagers … and our loved ones who believe “that in 2022 we no longer need feminism”.

Five years later #Me too, the issue of feminism has been treated at length and across the board. Finally, this is what her detractors say, who are annoyed to see the theme “reneged”. Perhaps treated, but not repaired. Although many of them believe that from now on society no longer needs to dwell on the subject, so much does gender equality seem to have been achieved – and so much the term feminism still rhymes with proselytism and extremism.

In his book Feminists in progress, author and cartoonist Lauraine Meyer wants everyone to understand the importance of this movement. This playful comic, conceived as a toolbox, is structured in eight chapters, which are in turn divided into reflection sheets. All contain illustrated explanations, examples and resources to go further.

A book to start your feminist journey

The issue of feminism is far from obvious for everyone and often a click is enough to feel worried. For the author, it all starts with a “late” awareness and the desire to share it:

If equality between men and women seemed essential to me, I had the impression that we had already achieved it, even if there were still some small things to fix. I was not fully aware of how ingrained sexism was in society.

I had a revelation by chance reading Benoîte Groult’s book, so be it. This book, which deals with the history of women, made me understand the scale of the problem and prompted me to do research on the subject.

There is awareness, also the need to share:

A good part of society oppresses or dominates another part of society. However, in the couple, in the public space, women should be free and have the same rights as men when they currently have the same duties..

For Lauraine Meyer, feminism is above all a global movement that allows people, whoever they are and whatever their gender, to live a happy and fulfilled life:

I wanted to address all the issues related to feminism: this is why I also speak of homosexuality, trans-identity, intersectionality, racism or religion.

Feminist in progress: for all those who do not yet know feminism

This book was designed to start the question of feminism:

I suspected that while it wasn’t obvious to me, it wasn’t obvious to other women of my generation either..

The book is also, and more specifically, about men:

I thought of this book so that it is as inclusive as possible and that men can identify with its male representations and become aware of the difficulties encountered by women… And by themselves. Ordinary sexism also serves them by stigmatizing them and assigning them to gender roles.

With its clarity and playful graphics, this book is also aimed at teenagers. The La ligue de l’enseignement network counts it among its educational resources for young people.

A practical structure, fun and engaging content

I am also an art director, I spend my time simplifying things visually and conceptually. I was interested in simplifying feminism and being able to explain it in a fun and accessible way.

In Feminists in Progress, Lauraine Meyer reviewed all the issues related to feminism, be it sexism at work, ageism or trans identity:

First I listed the topics covered in books, podcasts and Instagram accounts. I ended up with a lot of different topics and that’s how I created my chapters. When the comic was created, a few chapters were added, as new issues have appeared in society in the meantime.

This book is designed for all ages and all stages of life:

It is above all an educational guide. There is no story from start to finish and it can be read in pieces. We are not all affected by the same things at the same time. What I find interesting is that you don’t have to read all the chapters below and you can come back to them when you have specific questions or wherever you do being faced with a situation..

In short, a book to offer urgently to our boys, our brothers, our friends, our darons, our teenagers and our friends who still think their boyfriend is a feminist because he is ” it helps them a lot at home “.
