Special: The Cannes Parade, which will take place during the Cannes Film Festival, will host the “Ukraine Day” on Saturday, May 21, to support the country’s oppressed film industry.
Organizers said they will waive the Ukraine National Pavilion fee this year and will contact the European Commission on how to safely bring a delegation of 35 filmmakers and industry professionals from the war-torn country.
The planned industrial events program will begin on May 21 in Ukraine, which has attracted attention with the initiative of a producer network. At least six manufacturers will participate in the networking event jointly organized by the Ukraine Institute.
Organizers say the Goes To Cannes market exhibition includes Ukrainian documentaries and feature films in the early stages and post-production. A conference will also be held to discuss the industry’s restructuring opportunities. Week 22 will host the Wrap Networking event with drinks.
We have been told that delegates from Ukraine must reimburse their trip to the Riviera, but the festival is trying to arrange a partial refund for travel and accommodation. So far, the organizers have informed us that several Ukrainian professionals will confirm their participation.
Cannes announced last month that it would not accept Russian delegations to this year’s festival and market. The organizers said the event “does not acknowledge the presence of official Russian delegations or anyone affiliated with the Russian government”.
However, the festival will not boycott Russian films in its composition, as required by the Ukrainian Film Academy. The European Film Academy has announced that it will not accept Russian films at this year’s European Film Festival.
“We are all very shocked by Russia’s aggression against so many of our friends, Ukraine,” said Jerome Paylar, executive director of Cannes Market. “In addition to banning official Russian organizations that we announced at the beginning of the war, we also want to support Ukraine’s presence in the march as much as possible, and we hope that many of our Ukrainian friends can participate.”
