Ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, FIFA’s governing body is launching a free streaming service.
The organization claims that FIFA + provides access to thousands of live and archival matches, news and tournaments and sets of original series such as Fulwell 73, Andrew and Stuart Douglas and England striker Gary Lineker Goalhanger Films.
FIFA claims to be the first sports federation to offer such an extensive streaming service, with president Gianni Infantino saying it represents a “cultural shift in how different types of football fans want to connect and explore the global game.”
The service will be available today in five languages (English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish), with another six languages in June. When it launches, it will be available on web and mobile, followed by other connected devices.
A mix of contents
By the end of 2022, FIFA says the service will broadcast 40,000 live matches annually from its 100 member associations around the world, covering 29,000 men’s and 11,000 women’s matches.
FIFA says this live coverage includes matches from European leagues such as the Danish Super League, the Polish Extraclass, and the Slovak Liga Fortuna, which had previously been underrepresented in men’s, women’s and youth football around the world.
Approximately 1,400 games will be shown live from the start, although they will “grow rapidly”.
FIFA + will also offer all female and male FIFA World Cup matches recorded by the camera for a total of over 2,000 hours. The archive will open with over 2,500 videos dating back to the 1950s.
According to James Marley, FIFA + content manager, FIFA has the fundamental rights to all sanctioned stock games through its organization.
The service will also offer original documentaries. Series of documentaries, talk shows and short films and acquire exclusive programs called FIFA + Originals. Marley told Deadline she calls producers who have football narrative ideas to contact her.
