The 79th Venice Film Festival has come to an end. An international jury led by actress Julianne Moore has announced the results.

The main award “Golden Lion” was received by the film “All Beauty and Bloodshed” by Laura Poitras. It is noteworthy that only the film Poitras is a documentary out of the 23 films participating in the main competition. It tells the story of New York-based photographer Nan Goldin as he tries to bring Purdue Pharma to justice for producing opioids.

The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Italian director Luca Guadagnino, who directed the film “Totally and Totally”, about cannibals in love with Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell in the lead roles. Russell also received the Film Review’s Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Newcomer.

The Grand Prix went to the movie “Saint-Omer” by Frenchwoman Alice Diop. The plot is built around the trial of a young woman who killed her one and a half year old daughter on the beach at high tide.

The Volpi Trophies for Best Actor were awarded to Cate Blanchett in the women’s category and Colin Farrell in the men’s category. Kate starred in Todd Field’s Tar movie about the first woman to lead the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Farrell – in Martin McDonagh’s movie “Inisherin Banshee” about the conflict between two friends that unfolds on a remote Irish island. Oscar winner Martin McDonagh also won Best Screenplay for The Banshee of Inisherina.

The Special Jury Prize went to Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s film Bearless, who was imprisoned for “anti-government propaganda”. His film tells the story of two love stories where partners face obstacles in the form of social stereotypes, superstitions and power mechanisms.

This year’s jury included British writer Kazuo Ishiguro, directors Mariano Cohn, Leonardo Di Costanzo and Rodrigo Sorogoyen, last year’s Venice Film Festival winner Audrey Divan, and Iranian actress Leila Khatami, in addition to Julianne Moore.
