British aristocrat Charles Villiers, a distant relative of Prince Charles’ wife Camilla Parker-Bowles, has died in London. Villiers’ body, 59, was found last Friday in a room at London’s Durrants Hotel, the Times reported. He probably committed suicide.
Due to the eight-year long divorce process, Villiers’ name has been frequently in the media in recent years. He separated from his ex-wife Emma Villiers in 2012 and filed for divorce in 2014. The couple has a daughter, Clarissa.
The ex-spouses could not agree on where to divorce. Thus, Villiers insisted that all legal issues be settled in England, but his wife wanted everything to be in Scotland, where they lived after the wedding. In the past eight years, the couple’s case has been heard in five different courts and before 12 judges. At the time of Villiers’ death, the divorce proceedings were not yet completed.
Villiers’ wife also insisted that Charles continue to support her, but she refused. For eight years they spent all their wealth on the cause and both were ruined. Villiers was declared bankrupt and recently lived on a yacht with his friend as he was experiencing serious financial difficulties.
Additionally, as the Daily Mail points out, the divorce story didn’t have the best effect on Villiers’ mental state: he had many mental issues. According to journalists, a friend of Villiers’s recent life paid for a London ticket to the clinic, but Charles did not go for treatment, instead renting a hotel room.
Representatives of the royal family did not comment on the incident.
