The New York Attorney General wants Donald Trump to be detained for contempt of court

New York-based Leticia James asked a judge to rule that Donald Trump was disrespectful of the court, arguing that the former president had refused to rule on documents relating to his financial dealings.

James filed a motion in the New York District Supreme Court. If approved, Trump could be fined $ 10,000 every day as he seeks a court ruling.

In a statement, James said: “Instead of obeying the court order, Trump is trying to prevent it. We are calling for justice to intervene now, because no one is above the law.”

Trump’s team opposed James’s request for documents. But in February, Judge Arthur Engoron rejected Trump’s attempt to quash James’s subpoena because he was conducting a civil investigation into the Trump Organization’s business practices.

Engoron also ordered Trump and his children, Ivanka and Donald Jr., to ask questions under oath, but they appealed against the filing order.

James is investigating whether the company used a fraudulent property appraisal to obtain loans. Trump called the investigation “bogus” and politically motivated.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office was also conducting a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization, but the two prosecutors in charge of the case resigned.
