The BBC hired media diversity specialist Joanna Abei on a short-term contract the day after it was revealed that the company’s head of diversity, Jun Sarpong, will be leaving later this year.
Abe will work closely with Sarpong, Director of Creative Diversity, and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer of the BBC, as Interim Director of Creative Diversity for six months.
Indeed, Abeyie replaces Miranda Wayland, director of creative diversity at the BBC, who was hired last month as the head of Europe DEI for Amazon Studios and Prime Video, but remains in the role for the time being. The BBC is also hiring a director of diversity and inclusion.
Yesterday it was reported that Sarpong would be resigning three days a week. It is known that he will leave at the end of this year, although the exact date is not clear.
Several other black BBC executives left late.
Abeyie will seek to provide inclusion and diversity strategies in broadcasting through the BBC.
He is considered an expert in promoting a variety of hiring practices and an inclusive work culture. The former journalist’s media engagement business was able to find the roles of diverse and underrepresented people in the UK industry.
He also worked at the Cross-Party Diversity Initiative, as a consultant to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Culture Committee, and received MBE 2020 for Media Diversity Services.
Moore called it “a high degree of diversity and inclusion, with a deep understanding of the British creative industry”.
