In Nizhny Tagil, members of the Just Russia – Patriots – For Truth party purchased the remaining copies of the books from Chitai-Gorod stores and said that these books contained “LGBT propaganda” in their opinion. We’re talking about Andre Acıman’s “Call Me By Your Name” and “Harvard Square”, Adam Silvera’s “Both die in the end”, “Leah: life is far from notes” by Becky Albertalli and others. The age limit for all of them is “18+”.
The first book on this list is best known to the public – the novel “Call Me By Your Name” was shot, the main roles in the movie were played by Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. At the heart of the book’s plot is the romantic relationship between 17-year-old Elio and 24-year-old graduate student Oliver, who arrives for a summer internship with his father.

According to the representative of the local branch of the party, Alexander Solovyov, the books were purchased at the personal expense of the party members at the request of the local bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church. Information appeared on the network that books could be destroyed, for example, burned, but, as Solovyov said, the decision has not yet been made.
So far, the books have been handed over to the Nizhny Tagil diocese, whose representatives will examine the books for “the presence of LGBT propaganda and the absence of church-promoted values.” According to Solovyov, there is no talk of burning the books – what to do with them will be decided after “an analysis from the Russian Orthodox Church.”
Prior to that, local activists also demanded that the store remove these books from the shelves and called for a boycott of the bookstore. Party members also appealed to the prosecutor’s office to “evaluate the content of these books”, but have yet to receive a response from the supervisory authorities.
The original circulation of the books was about five thousand copies. Party members bought several hundred copies so that they would not be “dispersed”. According to Solovyov, despite tagging, children can still read the summary and learn what these books are about.
The news was interpreted by Yevgenia Mikhailidi, the family, motherhood and childhood expert of the “Centre for the Protection of Citizens’ Rights”.
