United States: Kansas protects its right to abortion by referendum and becomes a symbol of resistance

This conservative state chose to protect the right to abortion, a few weeks after the revocation of the Roe vs. Wade. An extremely strong symbol, while many have already almost completely banned abortion.

It was unexpected and the result is even more promising. Kansas, a rather conservative state in the center of the United States (and which Donald Trump won in 2016, then in 2020), has just sent out a strong signal voting with more than 60% against the lifting of the right to abortion in its Constitution this tuesday 2nd august.

This is a very clear finding, hailed by Democratic Kansas Governor Laura Kelly:

“I have always insisted that decisions about a woman’s reproductive health should be between her and her doctor. I am proud to say that the people of Kansas have defended their fundamental rights today. “

In Kansas, abortion is legal for up to 22 weeks, albeit framed by many restrictions, most notably by the fact that parents must have given their consent in the event of abortion being used when underage.

A trial vote that gives hope to abortion advocates

This popular referendum was the first since June 24, the day of the Supreme Court’s decision to revoke the Roe vs. Wade who guaranteed the right to abortion throughout the United States.

More than a dozen states have already revoked the right to abortion.

By voting against the removal of the right to abortion in its Constitution, Kansas shows the attachment of the population to the protection of sexual and reproductive rights. Tears and cries of joy echoed, as shown in this report by the NBC of the local pro-abortion activists who have been fighting for days in defense of the right to abortion.

During this campaign the mobilization of those who present themselves as “pro-life” ”was also very strong. While a high abstention rate was expected, polling stations were instead stormed throughout the day.

With this victory, Kansas would almost become a beacon in the night, as Politico explains, since it is “One of the only states where abortion has remained legal and has become a destination for patients in states that have instituted near-total bans, notably Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma. ”
