A new president of UK Broadcasting Channel 4 has been appointed. Media regulator Ofcom has confirmed that businessman Sir Ian Cheshire will join the channel’s board on 11 April and Dawn Airey will take over as interim president.
With the appointment of Cheshire, Channel 4 will have decades of commercial experience in both the commercial and public sectors, key competencies as the broadcaster awaits the government’s decision on privatizing the channel, which is currently publicly owned. – A profitable organization whose authority will change significantly in the event of a sale. Cheshire is currently the president of Spire Healthcare plc, the president of Environmental Investment Trust Menhaden plc and the chief executive officer of BT plc. He is also president of the Prince of Wales Charitable Trust and the Mental Health Management Board.
Prior to that, he was in charge of B&Q and then Kingfisher plc. He has also served as President of Barclays UK, British Retail Consortium, Debenhams plc and Maisons Du Monde SA, and as independent senior managing director of Whitbread plc.
His public service roles included non-executive director in the Cabinet Office and chairman of the Ecosystem Markets Working Group and the Economic Dignity Committee. He currently chairs the Independent Commission for Agriculture and Food. In 2014 he was awarded the title of Knight of Enterprises, Sustainability and Environmental Services.
Neither Chesher nor Nadine Doris, the UK culture secretary, who approved her appointment, commented on Channel 4’s future.
